Today we celebrate the International Human Solidarity Day 2024 Today, we honor the power of unity, compassion, and mutual support that defines International Human Solidarity Day. This day reminds us of our shared responsibility to bridge divides and uplift those in need, fostering a world where no one is left behind. Solidarity is the foundation of generosity, the driving force behind philanthropy, and the heartbeat of nonprofit work. It’s through collective action and the willingness to extend a hand that communities thrive and meaningful change happens. For nonprofits, solidarity is a daily practice: Fundraising: Every donation represents a spark of solidarity, where one person’s generosity fuels transformative impact. Collaboration: Nonprofits often work in partnership with communities, organizations, and individuals to tackle systemic issues together. Inspiration: Campaigns that resonate deeply with solidarity—like those on GivingTuesday—demonstrate how collective generosity can move mountains. As we celebrate today, let’s reflect on how we can strengthen bonds of solidarity in our work and lives. Whether it’s by supporting a cause, amplifying a message, or connecting with others to build a better future, every act of solidarity matters. Yesterday, we held an incredible discussion on the opportunities for philanthropy to reimagine top-down models to center individuals and communities in creating their own solutions. FSG CEO John Harper was joined by Steve Phillips, founder and author of Democracy in Color, and Mark Kramer, co-founder and current board chair at FSG. It was great to hear reflections from both Steve and Mark, who have been in the philanthropy space for decades as donors, researchers, community organizers, and authors. Some insights from the conversation: 💭 “It’s not that we don’t need philanthropy, and it’s not that we don’t need strategy or research. Yesterday’s event left me feeling deeply moved and inspired. I truly wish you all could have been there to experience the powerful emotions we shared while supporting Homeless Entrepreneurs. Together, we learned, we connected, and we made a significant impact. While we did raise some funds, I want to be honest about the challenges we faced. Our team reached out to over 300 friends and family members in just a month, pouring our hearts into this cause. Despite our best efforts, reaching our initial fundraising goal proved to be a tough journey. I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated yesterday. Your presence brought such warmth and energy to the event, and it wouldn’t have been the same without you. What resonated with me the most was the realisation that support goes beyond just financial contributions. We can also create opportunities by hiring those who are eager to start anew. It’s a reminder that anyone can face difficult times, and extending a helping hand can make a world of difference. Let’s continue to support one another in meaningful ways. If you’re open to it, consider offering job opportunities or even part-time work to those looking to rebuild their lives. Thank you once again to everyone who joined us and made yesterday so special.
