REGEN-BY-2 aims to develop a flexible and highly efficient multi-generation system, driven by innovative two-phase fluid machines (scroll expander and scroll compressor). This system is designed for the revalorisation of any type of renewable thermal sources (e.g., solar, aerothermal, geothermal, hydrothermal) as well as waste heat. The project follows a structured three-phase development process: 1️⃣Design: Develop the two-phase fluid machines and simulate the entire multi-generation plant using mathematical models and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. 2️⃣Construction: Building lab-scale prototypes of the two-phase fluid machines as well as of the integrated REGEN-BY-2 multi-generation plant through the design technical specifications. 3️⃣Experimental testing: Validating the lab-scale prototypes and assessing the overall performance of the multi-generation system, including its control system. 📢Currently, the REGEN-BY-2 Consortium is in the final stages of phase 2, focusing on the construction of the lab-scale prototype. I’m very happy to wrap up this year on a high note with Carnot 2024, the Belgian Symposium of Thermodynamics, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Sadi Carnot’s foundational work in thermodynamics. During this event, I had the opportunity to present my latest work on REGENby2, which sparked many interesting discussions on the topic of two-phase compression. Moreover, I had the great honor of being awarded the Best Poster Award of the symposium first day. I would like to give special thanks to Vincent Lemort, GENDEBIEN Samuel, Alanis Zeoli and Anne Scheuer for the organization of this great event!

📢 We are proud to announce that REGENby2 has successfully developed and tested a two-phase scroll compressor for the first time in history! These successful experimental tests were performed at the Thermodynamics Laboratory of the Université de Liège. Also, the Laboratory of Steam Boilers and Thermal Plants of the National Technical University of Athens has successfully developed and tested a two-phase scroll expander. These impressive results represent the initial and essential step towards developing next-generation energy conversion plants based on two-phase machines, i.e., Combined Cooling Heating and Power (CCHP) plants, industrial heat pumps and energy storage plants. 🗞️ More details will follow soon. The REGENby2 will integrate innovative two-phase scroll machines into its multi-generation lab-scale prototype 🛠️ #Expanders convert the thermodynamic energy contained in a fluid into mechanical power and pass it on to generators which then produce electricity. ➡️ Two-phase fluid expanders are able to work with fluid in wet vapour phase (liquid + vapour) to produce mechanical-electric energy due to simultaneous expansion of the fluid’s two phases. #Compressors use mechanical power coming from variable speed motors to increase the pressure of the working fluid, concentrating the energy it contains and transporting it through the system. ➡️ Two-phase fluid compressors are able to work with fluid in wet vapour phase to increase simultaneously the pressure of the fluid’s two phases, employing external mechanical-electric energy. Experimental tests have been conducted at Université de Liège and National Technical University of Athens to demonstrate the robust operation and good efficiency level of two-phase fluid compressors and expanders, and to identify further possible improvements. #EnergyTransition #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #Innovation #Technology #Efficiency
