Myanmar/Thailand tragedy!

The recent tailing dam failure in Zambia is one of the major TSF catastrophes. It is especially remarkable due to its ecological impact with more than 50 million tons of acidic and highly toxic waste released into the local hydro ecosystem and ultimately into the Kafue river - the main water artery of Zambia. The accident is classified as a major environmental disaster. Today the mining industry generates over 13 billion tons per year of potentially toxic waste, which is stored at TSFs. The safety frameworks and monitoring technologies of modern TSFs have seen a lot of development over the last decades and while they do not completely exclude the probability of accidents like the one in question or the failure at Brumadinho, Brazil, a bigger risk probably sit with old tailings or orphaned tailings, which often lack any monitoring or control as were developed under the old concession agreements, belonged to insolvent companies or are not covered by any agreements at all. We argued in one of our latest Newsletters that old mines and abandoned tailings, especially in the seismic regions, may represent a series risk, which is often not addressed by responsible bodies at all.
