📰 https://lnkd.in/dXTxcQwT

The more we aim to understand conflict, the least able we are to envisage peace. Can politics open up after conflict? After the conflict, who can lead peace? It’s impossible to make straightforward answers to such a complex debate, but the 23rd edition of CIDOB’s “War and Peace” international conference really contributed to shed some light on the ongoing challenges in the Middle East. This year’s edition of “War and Peace” reached a new milestone as the most attended edition to date, with over 200 participants. A special thank you to our new president, Josep Borrell, to Jaume Collboni, Mayor of Barcelona, and to Jaume Duch, Minister for European Union and Foreign Action of the Government of Catalonia for their support—along with all the members of CIDOB’s Board. And thank you to our brilliant speakers —Avi Gil, Omar Shaban, Salam KAWAKIBI, Mirette F. Mabrouk, Ángeles Espinosa, Merissa Khurma, Mohanad Hage Ali, Sanam Vakil, Araud Gerard and Natalia Sancha— for their thoughtful contributions, which made this year’s conference a truly inspiring exchange of ideas.

#WP2025 The Middle East has recently entered a new wave of conflict, characterised by an unprecedented level of violence. What are the roots of conflict in the Middle East? Tomorrow, CIDOB is organising the international conference 'War and Peace in the 21st Century. The future of the Middle East: understanding conflict, building peace'. In the first panel, Avi Gil, former Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel; Omar Shaban, Founder and Director of Pal-Think for Strategic Studies; Salam KAWAKIBI, Director of the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies; and Mirette F. The conversation will be chaired by Ángeles Espinosa, journalist and former Middle East Correspondent for El País. The second panel will analyse the international dimension of the conflict and how the international community can promote dialogue and solutions for a lasting peace, with Merissa Khurma, Non-Resident Fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy; Mohanad Hage Ali, Deputy Director for Research at Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center; Sanam Vakil, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Chatham House; and Gérard Araud, Distinguished Fellow at the Europe Center of the Atlantic Council.

Yesterday, CIDOB organised a Youth Lab in the frame of the #InvigoratEU project, where participants debated the challenges of EU enlargement and the neighborhood policy of the EU, and issued recommendations for policymakers and civil society actors on how to tackle these challenges. The outcomes of the debate will be integrated into the development of a multidimensional toolbox aimed at policymakers and civil society actors for invigorating the EU’s enlargement and neighbourhood policy.
