A new study supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation shows how AI can now read a deeper layer of biological code—our proteins. These “silent” changes don’t show up in your DNA but can play a major role in disease. The researchers behind InstaNovo and InstaNovo+ developed an algorithm that learns the language of protein fragments, finding clues that human biology—and traditional tools—have missed. Each year, millions suffer from venomous snakebites, leading to significant mortality and morbidity, especially in low-resource regions. Traditional antivenoms, derived from animal plasma, are costly, have limited efficacy against certain toxins, and are challenging to distribute in remote areas. Recent advancements have ushered in a new era of treatment. Scientists are now leveraging artificial intelligence to design synthetic proteins that neutralise venom toxins more effectively and affordably. These AI-designed antivenoms are stable, easier to produce, and hold the promise of being more accessible to those in need. This innovative approach not only enhances the efficacy of treatments but also addresses the logistical challenges faced in delivering timely care to snakebite victims. By harnessing the power of AI, we move closer to a future where life-saving antivenoms are within reach for all. The study was carried out by a team of scientists – including David Baker, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024. "AMR is invisible, but we survivors are not." This #WorldTBday, we share the story of Bhakti Chavan, who overcame extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) and now advocates for patients as a member of the World Health Organization Task Force of AMR Survivors. Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is making TB even harder to treat, as it has developed resistance to many effective drugs, leading to significant antibiotic use. The Novo Nordisk Foundation is tackling AMR through initiatives like the Novo Nordisk Foundation Initiative for Vaccines and Immunity (NIVI), which aims to develop new or improved vaccines for deadly respiratory diseases, including tuberculosis.
