Want to know what it really takes to build an LLM-powered feature that millions use? Here's a perspective from building our AI Hotel Highlights at trivago. We all know the pain of holiday planning - endless hours comparing stays, scrolling through lists, and reading reviews. At trivago, we tackle this "analysis paralysis" with Hotel Highlights, which gives travellers a clear, summarised view of what makes each stay unique. In the era of LLMs, summarisation might seem straightforward. But building it at scale takes a village: user researchers understanding pain points, designers crafting the experience, copywriters shaping the message, and product managers, data scientists, engineers and QA implementing how the data should be processed and made available on our product. As a Data Scientist supporting this project, I come back to the three pillars of the Machine Learning framework that applies to how we conceptualised and continue to iterate this feature: 💾 Data: Getting accurate, relevant data is fundamental. This means carefully processing and selecting what goes into the system. 🛠️ Implementation: Creating robust pipelines around the LLM, from prompt engineering to pre/post processing and content filtering. ✅ Evaluation: Building automated checks and regular quality inspections - especially crucial for non-deterministic LLM outputs. A year since its launch, it is fulfilling to see how this feature is helping travellers seamlessly compare and choose their ideal stay. Of course, there is always room to improve, and we are continuing to learn and iterate to provide the best experience to our users. What are your takeaways from building scalable features with LLMs? Would love to hear your experiences.

Entrepreneurial spirit meets local inspiration! 🚀 Last week, we opened our campus doors for a panel discussion with local business owners, organized by International Women in Business Düsseldorf. With Entrepreneurial Passion being one of our core values at trivago, we were excited to see three local entrepreneurs share their experiences of shaping the business landscape in Germany. Among Dr. Monika Hauck and Jenna Davis, we were especially proud to have Jessica Beger-Neth, Head of Strategic Technical Partnerships at trivago, on the panel. She brought a unique perspective as both a trivago talent and entrepreneur, sharing how her trivago experience shaped her approach to building company culture in her own business venture. Throughout the evening's conversations, a powerful message resonated: innovation doesn't come from playing it safe; it comes from experimenting and taking calculated risks. The discussions reflected our belief in testing ideas, learning fast, and growing from these experiences. Thank you to International Women in Business Düsseldorf for organizing such an inspiring event, to Carla Pittaluga for moderating the panel discussion, to our colleagues Laureen Roesch-Ahrens and Hadar Gutterman for their great organization work, and to everyone who helped make it a success. 📸 Photos by Nada Maleš

"My journey to trivago has been both challenging and rewarding. Moving to Germany to pursue a career in Data Science marked the beginning of a significant chapter in my life. A year into my studies, I joined trivago, where I discovered an environment that would shape my professional path. The collaborative and forward-thinking culture stood out to me immediately. Even as a student, I felt welcomed and trusted with significant responsibilities, which proved instrumental in boosting my confidence and professional development. After finishing my studies, I was offered a full-time role as a Data Scientist. This transition mirrored the Butterfly Effect: A small change can make much bigger changes happen. Looking back, I can see how those initial steps at trivago have blossomed into significant growth. Each day in this environment has profoundly impacted my life, particularly through the company's commitment to transparency and continuous learning. Being a Data Scientist at trivago has enriched my journey, blending my passion for data with a mission that resonates globally. This experience has been nothing short of amazing, and I look forward to the journey ahead, knowing there's still much more to learn and achieve." – Bittu, Data Scientist #hiring #trivagotales #techcareer

Have you ever wondered what it takes to lead a company through tough times and back to growth? In this episode of WirtschaftsWoche's Chefgespräch podcast, our CEO Johannes talks about his personal journey, key lessons, and the challenges of rebuilding a business after the pandemic. Johannes unpacked: 🚀 trivago's strong growth potential in an expanding travel market. 📊 The state of trivago and our team when he and the leadership team returned in May 2023. 💪 Their first tasks: rebuilding confidence and belief within the team and bringing clarity to focus efforts on real impact. 💡 He explains our mantra of "move fast and break things," which has greatly contributed to our successes. ✅ The lessons he learned while working in the hospitality industry that are still applicable to him today. And here's a fun fact: Johannes didn't always dream of being a CEO of a listed company. He had another calling. Can you guess what it is? (the hint is in the pictures 😊 ) 🎧 Click the link to listen to the full conversation: https://spoti.fi/4iM2yO1 A huge thank you to Konrad Fischer and the team at WiWo for having us. #Leadership #CEO #BusinessGrowth #trivago
