🌍 Did you know CO₂ levels have hit a record high in 2024? Here’s a number that should stop us in our tracks: 📈 In 2024, atmospheric CO₂ concentrations have risen past 424 ppm (parts-per-million) — the highest levels in over 2 million years. This means there are 424 molecules of CO₂ per million molecules of air. While fossil fuel emissions were at a record high, other factors like severe wildfires and droughts led to less natural absorption and more accumulation of CO₂ in the atmosphere. What’s even more alarming? The rate of increase is accelerating, making it harder than ever to stay on course for the target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. As scientists warn, this rapid rise in emissions is incompatible with our climate goals. By acting as carbon sinks, they absorb billions of tonnes of CO₂ each year. They regulate water, provide habitat for countless species, and even help cool the planet. But forests can’t support us unless we support them. Over the past decade in Germany alone, forests have started releasing more CO₂ than they absorb due to droughts, pests, and fires. To achieve the 2030 climate goals, significant efforts are needed to reduce forest degradation. Through Climate-Optimized Forest Management, we can unlock forests' potential to protect our climate. 🌳European Forests are suffering under climate change - with unexpected consequences 🌍 A new study from the University of Liverpool reveals that the European beech (Fagus sylvatica) has experienced a 28% decline in growth since 2005. Rising summer temperatures have triggered more frequent seed production. While this might seem like a good thing, it actually depletes stored resources, reducing the tree's growth. This means reproductive shifts and not moisture stress are driving the decline. 💡 Why does this matter? • Reduced tree growth equals less carbon uptake  • Disrupted reproduction threatens future forests • Long-term sustainability of beech populations is at risk This study highlights the hidden risks of climate change and the urgency of action that needs to be taken to preserve forests.
