When experience matters. LASEROPTIK played a crucial role in the development of the ATLID (Atmospheric Lidar) laser instrument aboard European Space Agency - ESA's EarthCARE satellite, providing the majority of optics for this groundbreaking system. Congratulations and thanks to mission manager Bjorn Frommknecht, his team and partners for the successful cooperation. ATLID is a state-of-the-art atmospheric lidar, the first of its kind in space, designed to measure vertical profiles of aerosols and thin clouds with unprecedented accuracy. This high-spectral-resolution lidar operates at 355 nm, utilizing a frequency-tripled Nd:YAG laser and a 62-cm diameter receiving telescope. What makes ATLID truly special: Unparalleled precision: ATLID can separate aerosol (Mie) and molecular (Rayleigh) scattering, enabling accurate measurement of aerosol optical depth. Synergistic capabilities: Working in tandem with the Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR), ATLID provides a comprehensive 3D view of the atmosphere, a world first for satellite-based instruments. Advanced technology: The bistatic optical design, with separate transmitter and receiver optics, ensures optimal performance in the challenging space environment. ATLID's mission is critical for climate research, as it will help scientists better understand the role of aerosols and clouds in Earth's radiation budget and improve climate models. By contributing to this revolutionary instrument, LASEROPTIK GmbH is at the forefront of space-based atmospheric research, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in environmental monitoring from orbit. Last week, level-2-data started to become available as evidence of the system's successful performance, after being launched in may 2024. We're proud to be part of this groundbreaking project that will enhance our understanding of climate change and improve weather forecasting for years to come. Having documented heritage with space qualified optics and coatings, LASEROPTIK GmbH is looking forward to the next projects. #LASEROPTIK #ESA #SpaceTechnology #ClimateResearch #AtmosphericScience #LaserOptics #EarthObservation #lidar #opticalcoatings #ATLID #EarthCARE Picture: (c) ESA / EarthCARE / ATLID instrument

Info
LASEROPTIK is a manufacturer of high power optical coatings and laser optics for laser applications in industry, medicine and research. The company uses PVD and CVD methods like IBS (ion beam sputtering), IAD and EBE and produces optical thin-film coatings and components, like - high LIDT laser mirrors, - thin-film polarizers and beamsplitters, - chirped mirrors and matched pairs for ultrafast lasers, - variable and gradient attenuators, - (gradient) output couplers, - IBS coatings on large substrates (diam. 500m or 2m length), - OPO mirrors and complex filters (...) in the wavelength range from 157nm to the IR, including all optics for excimer and (diode pumped) solid state lasers. Coatings are also made by electron beam evaporation optionally with ion assistance or magnetron sputtered, also for fs-lasers, (nl-) laser crystals and fibers. LASEROPTIK is specialized in highest LIDT and offers a rapid prototyping service. On top of infrared? Here we are.🍾 At 1030 nm LASEROPTIK GmbH can report record level LIDT of laser mirrors for ultrashort pulses, e.g. 1.227 J/cm², at ‘catastrophic damage’ mode, measured at common parameters. Working with 1 µm and high laser power? Get on top of infrared with us. Test conditions: 1030 nm, AOI 0°, 200 fs, 500 kHz, ISO 21254-2:2011, S-on-1 (10^6-on-1), measured 11/2024 by Lidaris Ltd. Johannes-Ebert-Str. 1. With effect from today, march 1, 2025, our street address has been officially registered and changed at all authorities. Garbsen's mayor Claudio Provenzano announced this wonderful tribute at the 40th anniversary of LASEROPTIK GmbH in September 2024 and unveiled the new street sign in an inspiring ceremony. Today is another day for our team, our business partners and friends to recall the achievements of our founder Dr. Johannes Ebert, pioneer in optical coating technology. Filled with gratitude, we are looking back on more than 40 years of LASEROPTIK at the forefront of technology and experience. Thank you, Johannes! ❤ #LASEROPTIK #laseroptics #opticalcoatings #Garbsen

It was clean-up day in our stork nest today! 🧹🧽 The mission was to get it well drained, so the offsprings don't suffer from waterlogging and getting sick in spring time. We took thirty buckets full of soil out and one with isolating "horse apples" back in. Yummy. All that to give the LASEROPTIK GmbH storks a comfortable home when they return in the next weeks. The plumber's helper 🪠 was my lucky charm today at appr. 8 meters of height and with nasty winds up there. Free german lesson: It's called "Sanitärsaugglocke" in technical german or just "Pömpel". It reminds us of having a well drained nest. 🪺 See you soon! 🐣

💥 The third research station we will introduce to you is ELBA ➡️ ELBA (Electron Beamline for fundamental science) is located in the radiation-shielded experimental hall E5 and is the first all-optical laser electron collider of its kind, designed based on the unique capabilities of the L3-HAPLS laser with high average power and high repetition rate. ➡️ It allows users to conduct research in the field of laser-matter interaction, at relativistic intensities (~5x1018 W/cm2) and at a high repetition rate (3.3 Hz). These unique properties directly call for application in the field of laser wakefield acceleration, muon generation, laser electron collider experiments, and nonlinear QED experiments. More information about the station can be found here: https://bit.ly/ELBAstation 🔗 If you are considering using this station as part of a user challenge, follow us - we will publish more details soon! 🔔

Another big coating challenge: With a diameter of 520mm and a weight of each 35kg, the two shown optics were guest stars in our giant IBS machine ‘Teresa‘. Thanks to Prof. Christian Schwab / Macquarie University of Sydney / Australia and to KU Leuven / Belgium for this interesting coating task. The optics have been deposited to become broadband high reflectors from 380-950nm. It looks like a metal coating, but is fully dielectric (>85 layers) for best spectral performance, leading to a better signal for the planned application compared to a silver or alumina coating. A special focus was on a flattened but still superior reflectivity profile. With a notably curved surface of the optics, both coating design and Teresa were optimized to reduce distribution effects. These broadband mirrors are used in an astrophotonic spectrograph setup, that shall discover earth-like planets, i.e. other habitable worlds by detecting resonant light. #largeoptics #opticalcoatings
