A Glashütte Original is more than the sum of its parts! Every four weeks, we invite you to #ManufactorySunday and shed light on various facets of our watchmaking art. And with our #StageOfTime series, we show you how we give time a truly grand entrance! In music, the articulation of a melody adds character. In the art of watchmaking, we take a very similar approach: with fine strokes and a sure hand, our craftsmen and craftswomen add furious accents to the finishing of the components. 𝗕𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴, for example, an art steeped in tradition, fulfils a dual purpose. Accurate bevelling of the edges at a perfect 45 degree angle thickens the material and makes it more resistant to external influences - a real bonus for the longevity of the movement. At the same time, the bevelled and polished edges create a marvellous interplay of light and shadow. This elaborate technique, which requires precision and dexterity, is a hallmark of exquisite movements - and a typical leitmotif of Glashütte Original. All our watches are beautiful to look at. But there is also a lot to discover beneath their elegant surface. Today we would like to take a closer look at one of these masterpieces. The elaborate skeletonisation of the 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 – 𝗦𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 is in keeping with the 180-year tradition of Glashütte watchmaking art. This model in a red gold case reveals the full beauty of a finely finished manual winding calibre through its cut-out dial: the winding wheels with double sunburst finish, the screwed gold chatons with blued screws and the decorated cock of the swan-neck fine adjustment. The manual winding mechanism - a rarity in the 21st century - also creates a link to historical Glashütte pocket watches. Skeletonisation is an art in itself. The first step is to carefully remove individual sections of the material. It must be ensured that the structural integrity and functionality of the movement are preserved. The removed material affects the overall weight and thus the mass distribution of the movement, which can have an impact on the oscillation frequency of the balance and the efficiency of the rate regulator. The cut-outs reveal elements of the watch that would otherwise remain hidden. Any irregularity, however small, would now become apparent. For this reason, each surface is carefully reworked and finished with traditional finishes. These patterns require precision to a fraction of a millimetre - which, incidentally, is also part of Glashütte's history. It was here that the metric system was once introduced to the art of watchmaking. And there is no end in sight - even today, the challenge of maximising accuracy spurs our watchmakers on to top performance. The best example: our Senator Chronometer. Its precise dimensions - in the metric system, of course, which was introduced to the art of watchmaking here in Glashütte – enable customised mechanics that work perfectly together and thus deliver the best results. These qualities are confirmed by an independent authority: in a strictly controlled procedure, each model is tested by the German Calibration Service to earn the official title of chronometer. This important step enabled more precise calculations and led to the development of measuring instruments that set new standards in the measurement of delicate movement components. An evening in the rhythm of time: Last week, our boutique's first Dresden watch get-together took place in a stylish setting that not only provided space for inspiring discussions about the art of timekeeping. Our two brand new Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase models were also on show. It was an evening full of passion for the art of watchmaking and exchange among like-minded people. German watchmaking is a highly complicated craft – and so is our vocabulary. In the Glashütte Original #Ticktionary we teach you the language of the artisans at our manufactory. This month’s lesson: the “Werkerselbstkontrolle”. All the way from punching the three-quarter plates to sealing a finished watch, the “Werkerselbstkontrolle” is an essential part of every single production step at the Glashütte Original manufactory. Each of our employees contributes their expertise and experience to ensure that all components meet the highest quality standards. This includes even the tiniest screws that we manufacture at our very own turning shop. Our employees continuously take random samples to check all the dimensions of individual screws such as the diameter of the head and thread as well as the height of the head and slot. However, not every production step can be recorded in figures. For example, the perlage, which is one of the traditional, hand-finished decorations on our mechanical movements. Only a well-trained eye can judge whether the hundreds of pearl-shaped circles on each three-quarter plate are neatly polished to create a harmonious overall pattern. By slowly turning the plate in the light of a standardised inspection lamp, the artisans can detect even the smallest irregularities. Manual work plays a central role in all of our movements, but nowhere does the dexterity of our fingers leave such graceful shapes as in 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴. Our engravers create great art in the smallest of spaces. Without templates, they refine components such as plates, balance bridges and cocks with filigree patterns inspired by the great Glashütte watchmaking tradition. No flaw is allowed to spoil the regular decoration, just as the components must not be impaired in their functionality. Years of experience, patience and precision are required to create these delicate ornaments, which make each watch unique – or rather a true original.
