Info
EERIE is a research project involving 17 institutions across Europe and Africa. The project focuses on improving our understanding of the role of ocean eddies in climate, including the development of high-resolution climate simulations where ocean eddies are explicitly represented by the laws of physics, to ultimately help inform policy and adapt to a changing climate. EERIE is a Horizon Europe project funded under Grant agreement ID 101081383.

"The Joules per Simulated Year (JPSY) metric was introduced to quantify the energy efficiency of each simulation. This revealed significant variability across institutions, platforms, and configurations, emphasizing the need for consistent methodologies to report energy consumption. Some models were able to achieve notable energy savings through better parallelization and resource management, while others exhibited inefficiencies, particularly in coupling costs and queue times." From 'Reducing Carbon Footprint in Climate Modeling: Unveiling the Efficiency and Energy Costs of Our Models', the latest story on our website, authored by our Barcelona Supercomputing Center colleagues Mario Acosta, Sergi Palomas Martinez and Xavier Yepes Arbós.
