We would like to congratulate our new doctor Timo Jünemann on completing his doctorate. His dissertation on "Eindimensionale Modellierung von Spaltströmungen in Schraubenvakuumpumpen" (One-dimensional modelling of gap flows in screw vacuum pumps) provides a model that takes into account all the essential characteristics of the investigated, single-phase gap flow. Based on experimental results, the model was validated for flows in the entire pressure range and was also implemented in a chamber model simulation for the simulation of screw vacuum pumps.

As we enter the new year, we are approaching the completion of the first year of our Research Unit Archimedes in just three months. Last week, we held a productive online full research unit meeting and are already looking forward to our in-person gathering this July in Aachen. Reflecting on the past nine months, we are proud of what we have accomplished so far. Check out some of our key achievements and publications here: https://lnkd.in/emqrREU3. This year promises even more exciting developments. Stay tuned for upcoming joint publications that will offer deeper insights into our research!

Precise measurement of pulsating flow with Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) In this video, we demonstrate the use of our LDA, measuring the pulsating velocity profile at the pipe outlet. By use of the Doppler effect, we are able to capture accurate, non-invasive velocity data - a critical aspect in understanding complex gas flow dynamics. Pulsating flows are inherent in systems where positive displacement machines are used. Measuring the behavior of pulsating flows with high precision enables improved designs, optimized performance, and new innovations. #Engineering #Innovation #FluidDynamics #LaserDopplerAnemometry #LDA

Last week, the first in-person ECR meeting of the DFG Research Unit FOR 5595 - #Archimedes took place in Dresden. Topics included updates on the sub-projects, a training session on the simulation tool TREND, and opportunities for collaboration moving forward. The days were filled with valuable discussions that not only enriched our project’s content but also brought the team even closer together on a personal level. A special thanks goes to Marcel Schneegans for his excellent organisation. https://lnkd.in/dkQc__TX https://lnkd.in/dJi2AW5B Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation Back row, L to R: Marcel Schneegans, Fabian Lorig, Lasse Burchardt, Julian Vorspohl Front row, L to R: Heinrich Lange, Fabian Luther, Fabian Sabozin, Sebastian Klink

Last week, we hosted a workshop for positive displacement machines, where interdisciplinary scientists from the Priority Program: “Carnot Batteries: Inverse Design from Markets to Molecules” had an in-depth learning experience. The workshop covered important topics such as compressor operation and energy efficiency strategies. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this event a great success. We look forward to more opportunities to share knowledge. The 27th International Compressor Engineering Conference took place in Purdue in July 2024. The conference papers can now be found in the Purdue University e-Pub. Matthias Heselmann, Lasse Burchardt and Andreas Brümmer contributed a paper entitled ‘Consideration Of Oil Interaction On The Operating Behaviour Of Twin-Screw Compressors Using Chamber Model Simulations’ for the Chair of Fluidics - TU Dortmund. With this and an excellent presentation by Matthias, they achieved the 2nd place in the Student Best Paper Award. Congratulations! Paper: https://lnkd.in/eVqVmK9i

Today was the meeting of the VDMA working group 'Hydroacoustics in centrifugal pump systems' at our Chair of Fluidics. Where we presented the work of the last few months together with the HSM of Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Afterwards we visited our test rig for investigating the hydroacoustics of cavitation and gave a training on the application of the hydroacoustic method (decomposition and four-pole theory). Thank you for your active participation and the good discussions. We are looking forward to the next meeting. VDMA, Sulzer, Flowserve Corporation, DÜCHTING PUMPEN Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co.
