Without a healthy ocean, there is no healthy planet. Today, on the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, we’re once again shining a light on one of the planet’s most vital — and most threatened — ecosystems: the ocean.   The ocean regulates our climate, feeds millions, absorbs CO₂, and produces over half of the oxygen we breathe.   Despite this, it remains one of the most vulnerable environments in the face of climate change and human impact. At the beginning of 2025, an extraordinary event took place in Antarctica. A giant iceberg broke away from the George VI ice shelf, revealing a stretch of ocean that had never been explored before. What scientists found was a living, active and complex marine ecosystem: sponges, corals, fish, crustaceans, and even giant octopuses. All surviving for centuries beneath the ice. The presence of large organisms suggests that these communities may have existed for decades, possibly even centuries. This discovery gives scientists a rare glimpse into hidden marine environments, helping us better understand the impacts of climate change on Antarctic ecosystems. A study that reminds us how closely the health of our oceans is connected to the well-being of our planet and future generations. We're pleased to welcome Jody Ford to the MSC Foundation team at Ocean Cay, in The Bahamas. Jody brings valuable experience developed directly on the island, where she previously led visitor excursions focused on Ocean Cay's unique history and environmental transtormation. In her new role, Jody will be supporting visitor and student engagement at our Marine Conservation Center, contributing to the launch of the Welcome Hub, and actively promoting awareness of ocean conservation among guests. During her free time on the island, Jody has the opportunity to go diving, eagerly contributing to the MSC Foundation's activities. Yesterday, we officially opened our Marine Conservation Center in Ocean Cay - an important and long-awaited milestone. Its inauguration ceremony took place with the participation of members from the Government of the Bahamas and other distinguished guests, as well as our partners, representatives, supporters, friends, and colleagues - all united by a shared commitment to ocean conservation. Onstage, we were joined by Mr. Rick Sasso, Chairman, MSC Cruises (USA) & MSC Foundation Ambassador; Hon. Kingsley Smith, MP, Member of Parliament for West Grand Bahama and Bimini & Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry for Grand Bahama; Mr. Pierfrancesco Vago, Chairman of the Executive Committee, MSC Foundation & Executive Chairman, MSC Cruises Division; Hon. Vaughn Peterson Miller, MP, Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources; Hon. I. Chester Cooper, MP, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation and Hon. Philip Edward Davis, KC, MP, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Last but not least, Dr. Sylvia Earle, founder and President of our partner arganisation Mission Blue, symbolically cut the ribbon to officially open the Center. This marks a key step forward for our Super Coral Reefs Programme, making a tafgible contribution to advancing coral conservation in the region of the Bahamas. Yesterday, on the occasion of the Naming Ceremony of MSC World America, the MSC Foundation had the opportunity to share its vision and to highlight the significance of the Marine Conservation Center at Ocean Cay, which will be officially opened today. and the MSC Group's broader commitment to the care and stewardship of the marine environment with thousands of guests. Our Executive Director, Daniela Picco, joined Rick Sasso and Allen Clifford on stage during the ceremony to share what it means to be MSC Foundation Ambassadors and why they each chose to take on this role.
