What does the future of road construction look like? The ETH Excellence Scholars got a glimpse last Friday at bauma 2025 in Munich, the world’s largest construction trade fair. Thanks to an invitation from the Ammann Group – a global leader in construction technology and long-time supporter of the Excellence Scholarship programme at ETH Zürich – the young talents had the chance to explore cutting-edge innovations and exchange with industry professionals. 👉 Big thanks to the Ammann Group for opening this door between #academia and #industry, and to all the Excellence Scholars who brought their curiosity and questions to the table! Making a meaningful contribution to society by leaving a positive impact in philantropy, healthcare and development.
An afternoon full of insight, inspiration, and impact! Together with SwissFoundations and the ETH Foundation, we had the privilege of visiting some of the most innovative and application-driven research environments at ETH Zürich. From biomechanics and human movement to medical nanorobotics and computational neuroscience, we experienced how ETH researchers and spin-offs are tackling some of the most pressing societal and health challenges of our time – including cancer, osteoarthritis, and mental health. Equally impressive was the visit to the Student Project House – a space where students are empowered to develop and implement their own ideas, surrounded by a culture of creativity, curiosity, and entrepreneurial support. This event reminded us how transformational science becomes when it’s paired with purpose – and with partners. Philanthropic engagement plays a crucial role in translating knowledge into therapies and solutions, and I believe there’s tremendous potential here for foundations to support and shape impact. A heartfelt thank you to: Mathias Terheggen (ETH Foundation) for curating the program, Rahel S. (SwissFoundations) and Nesma El Khayat (ETH Foundation) for their wonderful organization, Bill Taylor (Head, Department of Health Sciences and Technology) and his teams for opening their world-class labs and sharing their passion for research, Lucie Rejman (Head of SPH) for welcoming us to the Student Project House, Sonja Negovetic (ETH Zurich) for sharing her experience on assessing the impact of research, and to my fantastic co-lead Marion Bétizeau for the collaboration in the Research Working Group. And of course: Thank you to all the participants – I hope you left as inspired as I did. 📸 Some impressions of this unforgettable day are shared below. Let’s keep the conversation going! #ETHZurich #SwissFoundations #Research #Innovation #Impact #Philanthropy #ScienceForSociety #StudentProjectHouse #HealthScience #KnowledgeTranslation #Arthritis #Cancer #nanorobotics

NOMIS-ETH Fellow Craig Walton and his fellow researchers found new possible answers to where adequate phosphorus existed four billion years ago for life to emerge. The NOMIS-ETH Fellowship programme at the Centre for Origin and Prevalence of Life (COPL) at ETH Zurich is made possible by the generous support from the NOMIS Foundation: https://lnkd.in/eVG9GVvs More about Craig Walton's journey: https://lnkd.in/etKY-M6s
Life requires sufficient #Phosphorus, which is scarce. Researchers in the #OriginOfLife field have found #Answers about where adequate phosphorus existed four billion years ago for life to emerge. In brief — Phosphorus is a key molecule for life, but the element is relatively rare on Earth. — However, a very high concentration of phosphorus was necessary to set the first chemical reactions in motion that preceded life and led to the formation of important molecules such as RNA. — Large, phosphorus-rich soda lakes are the most likely places to have met this requirement. Researchers believe that it was in such lakes that prebiotic chemistry began and life emerged.
