Last week I attended the 13th International Tooling Conference in Trento! 🔧 As an ecoinvent data analyst, it was valuable to see how sustainability topics are being integrated into the tooling industry. 🌱   Key takeaways: ♻️ Tool steel manufacturers are setting decarbonization targets with specific timelines for both direct operations and supply chain emissions 🔄 Circular economy implementation faces practical challenges around scrap availability and quality 🌐 Significant regional production shifts have occurred over the past two decades, reshaping global supply chains 🖨️ Additive manufacturing opens up interesting questions for life cycle thinking - how might we best capture both process impacts and extended service life in our environmental assessments? The conference provided useful insights into how environmental assessment is being approached in this sector, with ongoing discussions around methodology standardization and energy accounting. ⚖️📊 Several presentations highlighted the strategic importance of critical materials for high-performance steels. 🔬⛏️ It was a great opportunity to connect with experts from leading manufacturers and research institutions across Europe and beyond. Just one week ago, Simone Fazio and I were invited as speakers by the Associazione Rete Italiana LCA during their XIX Convegno in Cortina. We presented ecoinvent, discussed the role of the global background database in LCA, and the main methodological advancements in the agricultural sector, including the new modeling of fuel, pesticides, fertilizers, and biogenic carbon. 📢 The main insight from the keynote speaker session: the new European directives call for increased competitiveness that leads to economic growth, through decarbonization and a few other environmental goals. While science provides solid methodologies and results for this transition, data plays a fundamental role in maintaining a robust and transparent scientific backbone to provide the correct support to policymakers as well as B2C communication. A warm thanks to the University of Padova for the organisation, the Associazione Rete Italiana LCA, Monica Lavagna as president, and the ILCIDAF group for this opportunity.

Next week, ecoinvent Data Analyst, Antonella Polimeno Camastra will attend Tooling 2025, organized by ASMET, Austrian Society for Metallurgy and Materials the Associazione Italiana di Metallurgia, a conference dedicated to encouraging up-to-date discussions on the production and application developments of tooling materials. The aim of the Tooling 2025 conference is to highlight the technologies that will enable sustainable improvements of tooling materials and their applications. Traditional focus areas include alloy development, heat treatment, and mechanical properties, as well as technologies that contribute to improving manufacturability, life-cycle prediction, and performance of tooling materials.
