We are pleased to share two pieces from the Davos Baukultur Alliance community on how we can proactively improve the places we live. ☘️ In the first, Antonio Gomez-Palacio of Alliance member DIALOG, considers regenerative urbanism as a crucial pathway towards addressing the climate emergency. 🧠 The second piece explores how our living environments powerfully impact our mental and physical well-being and the role our #Baukultur (building-culture) plays. Please have a read using the links below 👇
Strategies for City Builders; World Economic Forum; New York Times; US House of Representatives; Fellow at the Urban Design Forum
Professionals involved in the built environment need to move beyond net-zero sustainability towards regenerative urbanism. Two recently published pieces by the World Economic Forum focus on how to IMPROVE human habitats—as opposed to just 'do no harm'. Antonio Gomez-Palacio, chair of DIALOG, an integrated and civically engaged design firm based in Canada, shows how regenerative design is the pathway for more inclusive, dynamic and healthy cities, using several key projects in Calgary as examples for how regenerative design can add up to a greater whole. https://lnkd.in/eSqQVzwT DIALOG is a member of the Davos Baukultur Alliance, which is dedicated to creating regenerative living environments by utilizing a holistic approach to human-centered design that considers governance, functionality, environment, economy, diversity, context, sense of place and beauty. Connecting this holistic approach with recent research into cognitive neuroscience, environmental psychology, and pattern recognition is critical to understanding how our living environments significantly impact our thoughts, emotions and behavior, as well as our social interactions and physical well-being. https://lnkd.in/ed3SY2KJ It might sound complicated, but in fact it's pretty simple: we shape our environments and thereafter they shape us. We were thrilled to welcome over 50 global leaders dedicated to advancing high-quality Baukultur to the Alliance Breakfast: Shaping High-Quality Places—Securing Investment & Impact. A heartfelt thanks to our inspiring speakers—Tshering Tobgay, Anacláudia Rossbach, Alliance Chair Oliver Martin, Carlo Ratti, Jeff Merritt and our moderator, Lisa Kelvey for sparking such a thought-provoking discussion. Thanks too to Carla Haddad Mardini, Yoon Hong Huh and, Philip Heylen for your reflections and insights. ▶️ Missed it live? Catch the full session here: [https://lnkd.in/ebxfVmCT] Key highlights: 🌿 Lessons from Gelephu Mindfulness City: Showcasing the transformative potential of aligning city governance, design, and cross-sector resources with community happiness, wellness, and a harmonious relationship with nature. The plans build on the dramatic single-generation transformation of Bhutan, anchored in the unique Gross National Happiness policy. 🏘️ The pivotal role of land: As the most expensive component in the housing value chain and with urban land use growing at twice the population growth rate, how we approach land is central to addressing affordability, quality, and ecological challenges. 🌍 Scaling up innovation: We don’t have time for piloting anymore we have to go massive. Sharing practices through networks like the Davos Baukultur Alliance is crucial, especially for addressing the housing and ecological crises. 🏗️ Modular construction: Scaling more efficient construction practices can unlock community health and well-being benefits. 🏛️ Participatory governance and cultural identity: Implementing governance systems that engage communities and foster a profound sense of place Is key to achieving high-quality Baukultur. 🧒🏽 Child-Friendly Cities: Cities that prioritise the needs of society's most vulnerable, especially children are places that will be successful in the future and the present. 📖 The power of storytelling: Emphasising how storytelling connects projects with present and future communities, ensuring diverse, vibrant, and inclusive places. 🌦️ Baukultur and climate resilience: Carlo Ratti linked Baukultur to the 2025 Venice Biennale's theme, #Intelligens, reflecting on the urgent need for collaborative knowledge to help cities adapt to extreme climate challenges. Interested in how innovative place-based models can unlock significant retrofit finance? Then take a look at this recent Agenda article by Rupesh Madlani and Christine Zhou of Alliance member BwB At a glance: 🏦 Retrofitting existing residential buildings is crucial for mitigating climate change but structural and financial factors mean that relying on individual homeowners to take action is not a viable solution. 🌉 There is an urgent need for models that bridge the gap between "where finance is" and "where finance needs to be" to accelerate retrofit activity at scale without sacrificing quality. 💷 Bankers without Boundaries (BwB) is developing an innovative place-based approach that creates financially bankable projects while promoting a sense of community. https://lnkd.in/eJqRHdP8

Adaptive Reuse vs. Demolition? I am excited to share the G20 Global Smart Cities Alliance’s latest Model Policy on Adaptive Reuse of Assets, co-chaired with Nidhi Gulati and Cécile Faraud. https://shorturl.at/7i64N 💡 What is Adaptive Reuse? Adaptive reuse involves repurposing existing buildings or structures for new uses, extending their lifespan. This model policy, based on global best practices, can help city and industry leaders prioritize vacant, underutilized, or stranded assets over new construction, reducing carbon footprints and maximizing community benefits in urban development. 💡 How can Adaptive Reuse Support the Net-Zero Transition? Alongside our Whole Life Carbon Assessment Mandate Model Policy, Adoption Playbook, and Practitioner’s Guide, these recommendations support the transition to net-zero. Explore the Alliance’s policy roadmap here. https://shorturl.at/daoWC 💡 Complementary Toolkits? The Alliance’s model policies complement other toolkits from the Centre of Urban Transformation, World Economic Forum, addressing carbon emissions and scaling innovative approaches. Initiatives like Net-Zero Carbon Cities and the Davos Baukultur Alliance are part of this effort. 📢 Important piece of work spearheaded by Alliance member Avison Young and the World Economic Forum alongside many others. Discover more about the Playbook below 👇
Impact Strategist and Strategic Partnership | Panel Speaker & Moderator | Mentor - Promoting positive impact in real estate and urban development
Delighted to share our new ‘Social Value Playbook’ – a joint publication between World Economic Forum and Avison Young with contributors from across the world. https://lnkd.in/gU_E8XHr Three things you need to know about this document; also reasons why you should read: “Collaboration” – this is a work OF collaboration and ON collaboration. Through cross-sector, cross-geography collaborations, the Playbook aims to address systemic issues that demand collaborative approaches beyond boundaries. “Creativity and Innovation” – the Playbook offers ideas on how to foster innovative solutions that balance social objectives with other priorities, such as NZC and financial constraints. “Evolution” – this is not an end product but rather a starting point for an industry-wide collaboration. Your feedback – ideas and case studies - would inform the continuous evolution of the Playbook to further accelerate social value creation through urban development. On a personal note, I thoroughly enjoyed this international, cross-sector collaboration and am truly grateful for the opportunity to lead this work. It gave me lots of inspirations, energy and optimism. Please do take a look and get in touch if you are interested to get involved in ongoing work on this subject or to share any feedback you may have. “Our cities are going to have to be fundamentally different. As we rebuild our material economies, as we rebuild ecological infrastructures, we are going to have to think about a new human-machine economy. The human contribution is going to be about our cognitive capabilities, our capacity to care.” – Indy Johar, Founder of Dark Matter Labs and member of the Davos Baukultur Alliance The two-day Annual Meeting of Davos Baukultur Alliance at the World Economic Forum headquarters in Geneva brought together over 100 leaders from 25 countries, across 5 continents including investment innovators, leaders in circular construction and materials, ministries of urban development, housing and culture, visionary architects, social entrepreneurs, infrastructure designers, educators, and more. This uniquely multidisciplinary gathering was opened by Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider and State Councillor Antonio Hodgers. It featured debates, innovative practice sharing, and fostered knowledge sharing via 22 sessions, including plenaries, small group discussions, project presentations, and concluded with a presentation by Dr Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg on her Pollinator Pathmaker work creating ‘interspecies artwork.’ The Davos Baukultur Alliance, chaired by Bundesamt für Kultur BAK, is designed to recouple human-centered planning and development with more sustainable building practices to create more resilient, adaptable communities that strengthen culture and evoke a strong sense of place. >> See photos of the event here: https://lnkd.in/dMvGhyE9 >> Learn more about the Alliance here: https://lnkd.in/dyP5te8Y 📷 © World Economic Forum
