  • 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁! This edition takes a closer look at the 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in the hands of women farmers in southern Ethiopia. In our title story, Biovision reporter Lothar J. Lechner Bazzanella and photographer Maheder Haileselassie report from the field—literally.   Their feature follows a 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀—a key component of the Push-Pull method—which they sell to local farmers. By doing so they improve soil health, reduce pest pressure, and lay the groundwork for economic independence. It’s a story about agroecology as a pathway to resilience, justice, and self-determination—especially for women disproportionately affected by poverty and the climate crisis.   👉 Read the full story (available in German and French): https://lnkd.in/dTQ8_UDU #Agroecology #PushPull #SoilHealth #FoodSystemsTransformation #Biovision #AgroecologyWorks #Biodiversity

For Nicholas Omari in Kakamega County, the answer lies in knowledge, innovation, and agroecological transformation. In 2021, Omari discovered Biovision’s #FarmerCommunicationProgramme – disseminating practical know-how on organic farming developed in the latest research – at an agricultural fair. Just a few years later, his 0.6-hectare plot has become a model farm – showing what’s possible when farmers have access to relevant information, training, and support.   Last Thursday, our team – CEO Anders Gautschi, Head International Partnerships Piera Waibel, and Programme Manager Rani Nguyen – visited the programme, which is implemented in 13 counties in Kenya through our partner Biovision Africa Trust . The project is our most extensive and works closely with local governments, research institutions, and other development actors to sensitize farmers through various communication channels and train them in agroecological practices.   Together with our partners Fredrick Ochieng, Christopher Bundi Rwanda, Elias Biwott and Pamela Otieno they visited Omari’s 0.6-hectare farm and were inspired by his transformation:   ✅ 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆: Fruit and multipurpose trees, vegetables, fodder grasses, flower seeds, cattle farming, biochar, and compost – a true success story!   ✅ 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆: Nicholas continuously expands his expertise by reading our project’s farmer magazine “The Organic Farmer”, listening to the accompanying radio programmes, and using the Infonet platform.   ✅ 𝗔 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: The sale of his diverse farm products provides his family with a stable income.   ✅ 𝗔 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: As a Lead Farmer, he shares his knowledge with more than 50 farmers and the students of the local school.   Omari's next goal? Integrating honeybees and establishing an ecotourism project!   Sustainable farming starts with knowledge and dedication – and Nicholas Omari is a great example of that.   #SustainableFarming #Agroforestry #TheOrganicFarmer #SoilHealth #FarmerEmpowerment #DevelopmentCooperation #Kenya

🌱𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲: 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮! Farmers in Kiambu and Murang’a counties, #Kenya, are learning a groundbreaking approach to pest management with the support of the #Agroveg project. Through our ongoing training programmes, farmers are being introduced to 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗜𝗣𝗠) 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀. 🌿 One of the highlights of the project is the release of parasitoids – tiny beneficial insects (such as parasitoid flies) that naturally target and control harmful plant pests. Instead of resorting to broad-spectrum insecticides, farmers are now learning to harness nature's own predators to protect their crops in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way. The images show farmers closely observing the parasitoids in action! They’re learning how to release these tiny "superheroes" into their fields, promoting healthier crops and fostering a balanced ecosystem. This shift represents a powerful transformation in farming practices, from indiscriminate pesticide spraying to a more targeted and sustainable method that protects both our crops and the environment. Together, we’re building a agroecological future—one where food production thrives without harming biodiversity. A special thanks to ICIPE - International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, our implementation partner in Kenya, and their coordinators Komivi Senyo AKUTSE & Daniel Mutyambai, our project manager at Biovision Mélanie Surchat and of course to LED - Liechtensteinischer Entwicklungsdienst for supporting this important project! #AgroecologyWorks #SustainableFarming #IntegratedPestManagement #SustainableFarming #FoodSystemsTransformation #Agroecology
