Mining Leader for Canada | Partner at KPMG

On March 4, we had the pleasure of hosting our clients, colleagues and friends at our annual Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) reception. The #tariff war kicked into high gear that day, but everyone was still in good spirits and optimistic about mining and some positive impacts that may emerge. In fact, we surveyed attendees at the reception and other leaders in the industry on the impact of tariffs and there is reason for cautious optimism. - 80% of respondents said they can withstand a sustained tariff war - 66% are undertaking a strategic review of their operations - 78% expect the impact of tariffs will be at least partially offset by lower Canadian dollars. Great insights from my colleague, Mike Harling, on the momentum building across the U.S. #energy sector. With the #regulatory environment taking shape for businesses, we anticipate an uptick in energy M&A in 2025. Increased demand is driving investment across both traditional and emerging energy sources, as the U.S. leans into its competitive advantage. I share Mike’s optimism that this is a pivotal time for companies to seize opportunity, attract capital, and shape the next chapter of the energy landscape. https://lnkd.in/g3gRsk53 #KPMGEnergy #MergersAndAcquisitions

I learned much at the World Peteochemical Conference, but found the human element to be increasingly important as the unpredictability of policy shifts can lead to decision paralysis. There comes a point where controlling what we can control is the best we can do—and trust is something we can directly influence in our personal and professional relationships. I addressed this in a post yesterday, but wanted to follow-up! Check out KPMG US Chief Economist Diane Swonk’s latest piece (in the first comment) on the pernicious effects of declining trust amid uncertainty on the economy. The energy, natural resources, and chemicals industries are poised for significant transformation under the new presidential administration. The oil and gas sector stands to gain from accelerated drilling permits and broadened exploration initiatives. Conversely, renewable energy enterprises may encounter obstacles stemming from the administration's skepticism and the potential reduction of federal incentives. The power and utilities sector is anticipated to experience noteworthy advancements by 2025, driven by escalating electricity demand. Here are the top three takeaways: Optimism Abounds: Despite uncertainties, the energy and infrastructure sectors remain highly optimistic, with deals coming in fast. Data Centers Drive Demand: Data centers continue to drive offtake and increase power prices and energy demand. Repowering Projects Thrive: Repowering of wind, solar, and hydro facilities remains a hot topic, with new tax credits and no signs of slowing down.
