What You’ll Be Doing

The Director role in General Accounting is responsible for providing leadership and management of staff in order to achieve high performance levels and service excellence. The Director oversees all HR requirements, ensures collaboration and integration of work within and across teams with a primary focus on managing objectives that go beyond day to day operations. The key functions of the General Accounting team are:

  • Perform accounting for expenses and intercompany related transactions across all SBUs.
  • Provides financial accounting analysis to business partners.
  • Provides accounting advice to support product development and enhancement initiatives.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Accounting Operations Management - Oversee the operational management through proper resource allocation, process adherence and compliance. Manage work priorities, activities and volumes to ensure established Service Level Agreements are met or exceeded. Provide guidance and/or recommendations in the resolution of escalated issues/concerns from business partners. Support a culture of continuous improvement through the development and implementation of process improvements to ensure consistency and standardization of best practices. Develop and maintain productive and collaborative internal and external business partner/stakeholder relationships
  • Accounting Governance and Controls - Contribute to the development and implementation of financial accounting procedures to ensure compliance with accounting policies and ensure they meet requirements of user groups. Ensure the financial statement close process and settlement process is conducted in a timely manner and in alignment with financial accounting policies and procedures. Manage the integrity of financial results in accordance with GAAP (IFRS and local GAAP as applicable) and management accounting policies. Ensure Finance-owned controls are performed on regular basis and escalate issues as appropriate. Establish financial controls that reflect inherent risk and to manage exposure to material risks; liaise with internal and external auditors as appropriate to assess risks. Ensure all General Ledger entries are made on a timely basis and reflect the economic activities of the business. Provide support and direction to team members for the treatment of new and/or unusual transactions
  • People Management - Set appropriate context when assigning work to ensure that individuals’ roles support the achievement of the business unit’s priorities and CIBC’s overall goals. Build team and individual capabilities by providing development opportunities such as job shadowing, special projects, and training. Manage performance by providing fair and accurate formal and informal feedback, identifying and removing obstacles to performance and by explaining how performance expectations align with business priorities. Create a positive work environment and being an effective role model by championing CIBC’s mission, vision and values. Ensure compliance with policies, standards, guidelines and controls by applying the policies and controls fairly and consistently so employees understand what to expect. Hire the right people in the right jobs to align individual capabilities with job requirements and business unit goals.
  • Stakeholder Management – Liaison between Controllership team members, Accounting Policy team, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) teams and other internal and external partners, auditors, controls teams to provide and obtain information. This includes financial accounting matters, preparation of note disclosures, and senior executive support.

Who You Are

  • You can demonstrate advanced knowledge of accounting principles and organizational structures, and sound knowledge of financial information practices. You also have knowledge of regulatory issues and/or complex accounting/reporting systems and have an ability to identify, extract, and apply the information appropriately, as well as understanding and knowledge of the complex accounting and reporting systems. It’s an asset if you have knowledge of SAP Accounting systems
  • You’re a certified professional. You have current accreditation and good standing in an accounting designation or related (CPA, Masters etc.), with progressive experience within a large multi-dimensional organization.
