We are hiring for aquatic research technicians with a focus in toxicology at the Huntsman, details here: https://lnkd.in/gDwhJqhH
The Toxicology Centre is the hub of research and administrative support for the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Toxicology Program. Through the Centre and the related toxicology academic programs, we train world-class toxicologists who are sought after by society to address current and emerging human and environmental health issues. We provide regional, national, and international leadership in the practice of toxicology through public and technical outreach and stakeholder engagement. The Undergraduate Toxicology program at the University of Saskatchewan is the only program of its type in western Canada, and the most comprehensive undergraduate toxicology program in the country. The program has been designed to provide students with a basic understanding of how toxic substances behave in the body and in the natural environment, how they adversely affect individual organisms, populations and ecosystems, and how to measure these toxicants and their potential effects. The Undergraduate Program in Toxicology is a joint program of the Toxicology Centre and several academic units, including the departments of Soil Science, Biology, Geography, and Animal & Poultry Science, as well as the School of Environment & Sustainability. The interdisciplinary nature of the USask Toxicology Program, along with the diverse interests of a large number of graduate faculty in the USask Toxicology Group, provides students with a wide array of potential research opportunities. The Graduate Program in Toxicology at the University of Saskatchewan offers Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees with specialization across a wide range of toxicological expertise.

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝐗𝐀𝐈)? Our 𝗩𝗔𝗥𝗦 framework now has a new variation — 𝗫-𝗩𝗔𝗥𝗦 — specifically designed to address some of the key needs in the field of XAI. We’ve tested X-VARS and benchmarked it against the widely used 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗣 method across a variety of machine learning techniques, including connectionist models (e.g., neural networks), kernel-based models (e.g., support vector machines), and tree-based models (e.g., Random Forest). Our results show that 𝗫-𝗩𝗔𝗥𝗦 is significantly more computationally efficient and statistically robust than 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗣 — an important advantage when working with large training datasets. Check out our new Focus Article recently published in the journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (ET&C)! A true team effort and thanks to Marlo Sellin Jeffries for leading it to the finish line. And thanks to Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Immunotoxicology Interest Group for engaging in important discussions regarding the obstacles and emerging research needs in the field of fish immunotoxicology that served as the inspiration for this article.

Exciting new paper by USask Toxicology Centre PhD graduate extraordinaire Phillip Ankley! Phil's latest publication explores the impact of erythromycin on juvenile rainbow trout. The study found that ERY was rapidly eliminated from the fish, but still led to a significant reduction of select gut microbiota after exposure and depuration. Interestingly, there was a delay in the metabolomics response compared to changes in the microbiome, and only slight alterations were observed in the brain transcriptome due to exposure. These findings are crucial for understanding the effects of antibiotics on fish health and have important implications for aquaculture practices and environmental risk assessments.
