Building the financial feminist economy

About us

The51 is a venture fund and financial platform where current and aspiring investors and entrepreneurs come together to democratize access to capital for women. Founded in Calgary, we are building a new movement to create value, tapping into Canada’s underutilized female wealth and investing it in talented female entrepreneurs and venture funds. Women make up 51 per cent of the population… and women control 30 per cent of the world’s wealth. Forty per cent of us out-earn our male partners and statistically, companies founded by us outperform our male counterparts by 63 per cent. Despite all of this, we make up less than 25 per cent of directors on Canadian boards. Only 15.2 per cent of partners at Canadian venture capital firms are women. As a result, only 10 per cent of Canadian VC investment deals since 2014 went to companies founded by women. How can Canada’s economy reach its true potential if 51 per cent of the population isn’t fully participating? By uniting Canada’s untapped female wealth, we can create a new critical mass of female investors that will drive the next economic wave and make Canada the centre for female-powered capital. With 30 per cent of Alberta’s tech start-ups founded or co-founded by women, our province is well on its way to achieving that critical mass, but our vision is bigger than just Alberta. Female-founded start-ups: By 2030 we want to see the rest of Canada increase the percentage of female-founded start-ups from 13 per cent to Alberta’s 30 per cent. Financing: We want to see Canada increase financing for female-founded start-ups by 30 per cent, year over year.

We’ve been hearing some chatter about Canada becoming the 51st state, but let’s be clear: The51 was spoken for long ago. Our name isn’t about borders; it’s about breaking barriers—and unlocking opportunity. Women make up 51% of the population, yet hold less than 25% of board seats and represent just 19.4% of partners at Canadian VC firms. The result? 👇 Since 2014, only 10% of Canadian venture deals involved shaking hands with a woman. But with a $4 trillion wealth transfer to women on the horizon, this is one of the biggest economic opportunities of our time. When women invest, build, and lead, the entire economy benefits. So while others debate Canada’s place on the map, we’re focused on shaping its financial future. ❤️

Six years ago, we had an idea. 💡 A belief that women weren’t just participants in the economy—they were leaders, investors, and wealth creators. So we gathered 70 women in a Calgary kitchen, poured some wine and decided to rewrite the rules of finance. We weren’t waiting for permission. We weren’t asking for a seat at the table. We were building the damn table! What started as a conversation is now a movement: A 35,000-strong community, and a national force reshaping the financial landscape. While the journey was planned, the road has been unforeseen, but the milestones speak for themselves. Here are six win to celebrate our six years 👇 1. Built a community of 35,000+ investors, founders, and allies 2. Launched a pilot early-stage investing program in partnership with Haskayne School of Business, ultimately becoming one of Movement51's flagship programs: The Financial Feminism Investing Lab 3. A platform to raise three funds: Fund I, Fund I and The51 Food & Ag Tech fund (closing at an impressive $51M) 4. Our General Partners Shelley Kuipers and Judy Fairburn were recognized as one of The Globe and Mail's 50 Changemakers in 2023 5. Launched a Founder Community and hosted events coast to coast (within 36 hours!) 6. Supporting the launch of Canada’s first professional women’s football league by facilitating investment into the Calgary Wild FC team And we’re just getting started. Now, we’re at a turning point in the economy. Women are set to control nearly half of Canada’s wealth by 2030 and already drive the majority of consumer spending. And yet, investment trends haven’t caught up. Women-led businesses still receive a fraction of venture capital, despite consistently building high-growth, high-impact companies. That’s not just a gap. That’s an untapped financial opportunity. By 2030, The51 is raising the stakes: catalyzing $2.5 billion in women-led capital to fuel an economic shift. A future where women-led businesses aren’t just funded—they’re scaling, competing, and defining market growth. The next six years? They’re about ownership. More capital. More investors. More women driving the economy forward. Today, we cheers to us. 🥂 Tomorrow, we build what’s next.
