In 2002 the Income Tax Act was changed to allow Registered Canadian Charities to grant to non-registered organizations. This was a big change for the charitable sector! Today, the Veritas Foundation releases its latest Research Report which provides the Charity Sector's first insight into the impact of this change. For example, we found over $800 million in grants by 788 Charities were made to non-registered organizations in 2023. We reveal the average grant size by cash and non-cash gifts, Canadian and non-Canadian recipients, a list of the top grantors, and much more. This report presents a plain-language explanation of the most common terms and expressions used in the industry, including phrases and terminology related to fundraising. The goal is to define many of the terms encountered in charitable giving. Understanding and utilizing the right terminology can be crucial to a charity and its employees’ success, especially regarding fundraising. The Veritas Foundation is pleased to welcome MaryLouise Kearns to its Board of Directors. MaryLouise Kearns brings over 30 years of distinguished service in law enforcement, offering profound expertise in leadership, strategic investigations, and major case management. Most recently, MaryLouise was Detachment Commander – Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) from 2022 to 2024.  In this senior leadership role, MaryLouise guided both uniformed and civilian personnel in the Town of Caledon, Ontario. Before this, she was a Major Case Manager/Inspector with the  OPP Criminal Investigative Branch (2017-2022). MaryLouise spearheaded some of Ontario’s most complex and high-profile investigations, including homicides and organized crime, and led Ontario's largest residential school investigation. The Veritas Foundation is a non-profit charitable private foundation.  Its mission is to be Canada’s authoritative source for individuals, groups and companies to participate in the country's charitable sector and evaluate its effectiveness and impact. To accomplish this mission, the Veritas Foundation has created the Veritas Foundation Giving Fund (VGF), a Donor-Advised Fund. Veritas also provides donors and others with independent, fair, and respectful research into Canadian registered charities to help them evaluate and choose their favourite charities. We are pleased to present our third annual Veritas 500 Report on Canada’s Fastest-Growing Charities, for the period 2018-2023. We base our ranking on Total Tax-Receipted Donation Revenue reported by the charities. This report provides insight into which areas of Canada’s Charitable and Philanthropic Sector are garnering increasing attention from both donors and the community, and in turn, provide products and services that are in demand by the communities they service. The results also draw attention to those charities that are excelling in their charitable mission through good management, mission awareness, and project impact. We first present the Top 25 Fastest Growing Charities in Canada from 2018 to 2023. We then provide additional insight by highlighting the top 5 fastest growing charities by Charity Category, by Province, and the top 15 fastest growing Small Charities and Large Charities.
