On behalf of myself and my colleagues at the Environics Institute for Survey Research, I would like to express my profound sadness at the news that Jeff Reitz has died. Over the years, Jeff regularly encouraged and frequently advised the Institute on its studies on attitudes to immigration, diversity and multiculturalism in Canada. In particular, he offered guidance on the landmark Black Experience Project. Jeff only recently joined the Institute as one of our Fellows and we were beginning to imagine ways to continue working together. It is a great loss for us, for his many friends and colleagues, for his family and for the country. Since 2019, The Environics Institute for Survey Research & Canadian Race Relations Foundation have partnered to conduct a series of national surveys on race relations in Canada. This landmark research establishes critical benchmark indicators of perspectives and experiences across the country's diverse population, that document the current reality and progress over time. The report from the third survey (2024) has just been published and is available here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gb5U_xkh This latest survey updates the data collected in 2019 and 2021, and expands to address two new themes: - Experience with hate incidents and hate crimes - the first national survey to address this issue in depth, both in terms of personal and indirect experiences; and - Attitudes, perceptions and experiences with respect to discrimination against Muslims and Jewish people in Canada. This latest research, once again, documents the reality of racism, prejudice and hate in Canadian society, and the extent to which it is pervasive across the population and persistent over time. The prevalence and persistence of racism notwithstanding, the research indicates that Canadian society is not defined by inter-group conflict and social divisiveness. Most Canadian believe that race relations are generally good in terms of how people from different groups get along and in the equality of opportunity for all, and a majority are at least somewhat optimistic that racial equality will happen in their lifetime. This positive perspective has strengthened over the past three years, most notably among Black and most other racialized people, who are now more positive about the future than white Canadians.

Between 40 and 50 percent of employees worry that allowing people to work from home leads to people missing out on things, impedes teamwork, and is unfair to those whose jobs can’t be done from their kitchen tables. Find out more 👉 https://lnkd.in/gW6mys8r

Has work-from-home gone too far? Actually, many workers in Canada would like to be working at home more often than they currently do - not less. A small proportion of workers are anxious to get back to the office, but they are greatly out-numbered by the proportion who are disappointed that they don’t have even more opportunities to work from home. The message to employers continues to be: good luck with those back-to-the-office mandates. https://lnkd.in/dU2nFf2v #work #office #workfromhome

Views on the pros and cons of working from home vary among workers from different backgrounds. Racialized workers (compared to those who are not racialized) tend to be a bit more likely to agree with the positively worded statements about working from home — for instance, that allowing people to work from home as much as they want has made their workplace a more enjoyable place to be. But they also tend to be more likely to agree with some of the negatively worded statements. For instance, while 52% of non-racialized workers agree that people who work at home are missing out on too many things, agreement rises to 62% among those who identify as Black, and 64% among who identify as South Asian. South Asian workers in particular are also more likely to agree that it is impossible to work together as a team when some people are working at home and not in their regular office or workplace. Does the shift to working from home impede teamwork? Limit productivity? Mean that too many people are "missing out?" Opinions on these questions differ between those who are, and those not, working from home themselves. Does this point to a new rift in the workplace?
