One key topic that stood out was the conversation around tariffs and their projected impact on glazing materials and costs. Our work at the Victoria handyDART Centre is done! This is the first-ever BC Transit facility built to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold requirements 🌱 Located in View Royal and set to open later this month, the new handyDART Centre will help respond to the growing needs for handyDART services in Greater Victoria. What was once a contaminated landfill is now a critical emergency resource for surrounding communities. The latest "Builders with Purpose" newsletter from Chandos Construction celebrates the recently completed Maplewood Fire and Rescue Centre, a 48,000 square foot facility in North Vancouver featuring four double-bay firehalls and a state-of-the-art training centre. Sky Windows is proud to have contributed to this project as the supplier and installer of sunshades, louver, aluminum doors, and exterior curtain walls with art glass featuring Indigenous artwork. One of our mantras is to “Think Big”. And like many of the values we hold at work, “Thinking Big” influences our lives outside the office. It’s no surprise, then, that the daughter of Sky Windows CEO Theo Koffas would embrace this mindset to help make a difference. Georgia Koffas is kicking off a blood drive in honour of her 9-year old cousin, Panayiota. Panayiota lives with a rare condition called Dravet syndrome, and recently found herself in the Vancouver Children’s Hospital ICU for over a month, intubated and fighting for her life. Panayiota survived largely thanks to the many pints of blood and plasma she received from selfless donors. Touched by the generosity of strangers and inspired to help, high school student Georgia decided to “think big” - challenging others to make a life-saving donation via the launch of a national blood drive, Drops for Dravet. To show support, Sky Windows team members are already booking appointments to donate blood. But the need is huge - 100,000 new donors are required each year to help meet the needs of patients in Canada. 🚨 Oakridge project update 🚨 We are making great progress, with our focus this week being on separating conditioned and unconditioned spaces in two phases by glazing the curtain wall system. The Sky Windows team continues to work successfully within the constraints of the space, adeptly navigating the low ceilings even while carrying and installing large panes of glass throughout the parkade. The post-installation of pressure plates and caps will also require strategic planning due to limited access to the openings. Every project comes with its own unique challenges, but they contribute to an even greater sense of accomplishment when the work is finally finished. This massive project involves doubling the size of the existing mall to 1.4M square feet, as well as the addition of over 2,900 residential units in 13 towers, 300,000 square feet of commercial office space, and a 70,000 square foot civic centre. Last night, Sky Windows CEO Theo Koffas attended the Guardian Glass North America Commercial Project Awards alongside business partner Jim (Dimitrios) Mitrakos, CPA, CA of First Growth Management to celebrate the nomination of our projects. Taking place in Las Vegas during the Building Envelope Contractors Conference, the awards celebrate the best in commercial construction and major renovation projects using Guardian Glass products. Two 2024 Sky Windows projects, Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre and Maplewood Fire & Rescue Centre, were among the Canadian nominees for the People’s Choice Awards 🙌 While the award went to another very worthy nominee, it was a thrill and an honour to see our work share the screen with other extraordinary projects. Last night, Sky Windows team member Eduardo Carvalho took in the good vibes and great company at VRCA’s Member Mixer in Langley.
