Did you know? Alongside the Steel and Metals Action Plan, the European Commission recently launched the Transition Pathway for Metals. Why is this initiative relevant?
💡The Transition Pathway sets out 60 actions under 15 topics to support a successful transition pathway for the #metals sector and, most importantly, unlike the Action Plan, 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐬.
🎯 It focuses on building resilience in the metals sector to support the achievement of the energy and digital transitions in Europe and recognises that a strong metals industry is vital for many major European value chains such as automotive, construction, machinery, and defence.
🎙️ It's a very comprehensive account of what our sector needs to thrive in Europe - it represents a years’ work of discussions with stakeholders from all sectors, including NGOs and Trade Unions.
The pathway highlights actions needed such as:
🟢 Affordable and secure energy, with a strong focus on PPAs and need for more actions to alleviate the cost of taxes & levies on industry, as well as making sure that the #CBAM works to avoid circumvention, free-riding and resource shuffling.
🟢 New trade policy instruments that are effectively deployed to tackle distortions from imports and guarantee access to export markets.
🟢 Faster permitting procedures for activities along the value chain – mines, processing plants, recycling facilities.
🟢 Metals are chemicals too - the plan takes note of our request to consider complementing the hazard-based approach to chemicals with a risk assessment and control for chemicals management.
🟢 Get the Critical Raw Materials Act implemented asap and boost the Strategic Projects so that we can get our industry moving forward.
🟢 More innovation – without further development we cannot keep a leading edge globally.
🟢 Providing the right finance tools to get much needed funding to where it is needed most, including under the MFF.
🟢 Increasing the EU metal recycling sector’s access to metal waste by removing barriers to intra-EU waste shipments.
🟢 Developing skills and on the job training to make sure we have an attractive image to build the workforce of the future.
We at Eurometaux welcome this important initiative and look forward to working with all stakeholders, and the European Commission in particular to implement this pathway for our sector 🤝
