🏡 From strangers to housemates — meet four Ontario women redefining what ageing in place can look like. Faced with rising housing costs and a desire for connection, they turned to the Golden Girls model of shared living. Dr. Samir Sinha, Director of Health Policy Research at the NIA, calls the model a “missing middle” option for older adults who might no longer be able to manage or afford a large home on their own, but do not yet require nursing care. Shared housing offers companionship, affordability, and a new path forward for ageing Canadians. ‼️Older Canadians are the most powerful voting bloc in the country — but you wouldn’t know it from the 2025 election discourse. In a new Toronto Star op-ed, NIA’s Director of Policy Gabrielle Gallant and Abacus Data 's 📊 David Coletto 🌎 break down the reality of Canada’s ageing population: by 2030, nearly a quarter of Canadians will be over 65. This shift will put pressure on health care, housing, and retirement security—but political leaders aren’t addressing it with the urgency it deserves. The National Institute on Ageing is thrilled to welcome Abacus Data as our new research partner for the NIA Ageing in Canada Survey. Their expertise in public opinion research will help us deepen our understanding of how Canadians experience and perceive ageing — and what needs to change to better support older adults. With nearly a quarter of Canadians set to be over 65 by 2030, this demographic shift will reshape everything from health care to housing to financial security. With older Canadians turning out to vote at higher rates than any other age group, these issues will become a priority. The question is: will our political leaders be ready? 📢 In a new NIA report, led by NIA Senior Fellow John Stapleton and co-authored by Gabrielle Gallant, calls on political leaders to raise the GIS earnings exemption to $10,000 and index it to inflation — a simple fix to help vulnerable older adults stay afloat. 🧓 Too many older Canadians are penalized for working past retirement age. 💬 “We need policies that support — not penalize — low-income older adults who want to stay in the workforce,” says NIA Senior Fellow John Stapleton. 🗳️ With nearly 1 in 4 Canadians soon to be over 65, it’s time for all political parties to take older voters seriously. 🙏 Special thanks to our expert reviewers: Dr. Gillian Petit (University of Calgary) Alexi White (Maytree Foundation) Vasiliki (Vass) B. (McMaster University) 📄 Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/eMP7B7vt
