MEIA assists its members in the business of the environment through: provision of HR services, collaboration with government and other organizations, communication of environmental issues, support for the development of innovative technologies, provision of a networking forum. Our membership is a diverse group of Manitoba companies and organizations – environmental technology and service companies, engineering and environmental consulting firms, government departments and crown corporations, law firms, businesses, research companies, associations and community organizations. MEIA provides opportunities to expand contacts, gain business development information, stay current with governmental policy and legislation, and increase knowledge of environmental practices and initiatives. We facilitate information exchange and networking through special events, breakfast sessions, training programs, information updates and newsletters. MEIA undertakes initiatives with the provincial environmental industry associations in western Canada to develop business opportunities and promote the environment sector. Today is the final day to register for ManSEA's Sustainable Energy Conference. This year's conference will be held on April 9th in Steinbach, MB. Trina Semenchuk will discuss her business Little Greenhouse That Could and how she uses the energy model she created and her mechanical engineering background to evaluate the energy consumption of proposed vertical farm designs while comparing that to traditional agriculture. Lorne Pelletier will present how the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), the National Government of the Red River Métis, is planning for up to 300MW of energy production through wind energy developments within the next five years. Paul Neufeld, Project Manager at Southern Comfort Mechanical Inc. and Ed Lohrenz, of GEOptimize will discuss the geothermal industry and the challenges of different ground source options and briefly touch on the pros and cons of air-source heat pumps. Joseph Furgal, P.Eng., Preconstruction Manager at Bockstael Construction, will guide attendees through the intricacies of a deep energy retrofit design-build. His presentation will showcase innovative work with solar and geothermal energy at the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation's Dakota Oyate Lodge. Joe will be joined by Darby Essie, Energy Advocate of Sioux Valley. Darby works with Energy Efficiency Manitoba to bring their programs into Sioux Valley to lower energy costs to homes and community businesses. We will also hear from Henry David (Hank) Venema of Strategic Systems Engineering and Alec Massé of Typha Co. to learn more about cattail harvesting and their utilization as biomass feedstock. Curtis Wiebe, board member of ManitobaEV, as he shares his family’s journey into the EV lifestyle—the challenges, the rewards, and the lessons learned along the way. He’ll also explore the advantages of going electric for rural communities and discuss ways to encourage more neighbours to join the EV revolution. Darrell Boyko, Vice President of Business Development at Innovative NRG Inc. will discuss accelerating the adoption of advanced waste-to-energy technologies. With a focus on bridging the gap between cutting-edge solutions and real-world impact, he will highlight how waste challenges can be turned into energy opportunities. 🌱 Event Recap: Student Chapter Speed Networking & Workshop – Reduce, Reuse, Relations! ⚖️ Last night, the MEIA Student Chapter and UM Pre-Law Society came together for an evening of learning, networking, and mentorship. The event gave students the opportunity to develop essential networking skills and connect with professionals in the environmental and legal sectors. The evening kicked off with a dynamic networking workshop led by Katharine Cherewyk, Certified Executive Coach (ACC) and Padraig Facilitator. Students explored how to identify their personal values, build their personal brand, overcome networking fears, and engage in meaningful, curiosity-driven conversations. Following the workshop, students put their new skills to the test during a speed networking session with mentors from the legal and environmental fields. Engaging in structured 10-minute rotations, students had the chance to connect with industry leaders, gain valuable insights, and expand their professional networks. We are incredibly grateful to our mentors for sharing their time and expertise: Peter Kulchyski, Delaine Russo, Randy Webber, Carly Dyck, John Stefaniuk, K.C., Lindsay Warelis, Sven Hombach, and Ute Holweger.
