  • 💧Don’t forget to sign up today!💧 You are invited to a bilingual national webinar with simultaneous translation on April 8 entitled “Ecologically Significant Areas (ESAs): A new freshwater and nearshore conservation tool.” Background: The federal Fisheries Act (Section 34) enables the establishment of Ecologically Significant Areas (ESAs) – a regulatory tool intended to provide long-term protection of fish and fish habitat that is sensitive, highly productive, rare or unique. While ESAs have been in the Fisheries Act since 2012, further details were added in 2019 (Section 35.2) and a framework was developed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada in 2023. ESAs have yet to be used but they have the potential to protect critical fish habitat and fill an important gap in protecting aquatic ecosystems. Presenters will include: 🔹Nikki Skuce, Director, Northern Confluence Initiative 🔹Susanna Fuller, Vice-President Conservation & Projects, Oceans North 🔹Joseph Wasylycia-Leis, Senior Freshwater Conservation Campaigner, Oceans North 🔹Scott Beaver, President, St. Mary’s River Association UPDATE: Note that Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is unable to present due to the current federal election. However, DFO staff have kindly addressed some of the pre-webinar questions we received in advance, and their comments will be shared with webinar participants. They also raised policy questions for your review during the breakout sessions and will be able to respond in writing post-election to any questions left unanswered during the webinar. 💧Join us to learn more about this conservation tool and hear about potential opportunities to receive support for protecting a nearshore or freshwater system in your region!💧 ➤➤REGISTER NOW: https://lnkd.in/eHZUBp5R

  • We have lots of fun contests for our 40th Anniversary Fundraiser Back to the '80s Party on March 21st, from 8PM to 1 AM at the Sidestage (700 Osborne St.) including our Devil May Hair '80s Hairstyling Contest sponsored by Devil May Care Brewing Company. Rock that mullet, tease up your hair as big as possible, and get out the blue eye shadow. Two individuals will win $50 each. Friday, March 21 at Sidestage Winnipeg (700 Osborne St.). Tickets at: www.sidestagewpg.com or $20 at the door. Why a Devil May Hair 80s Hair Styling Contest? To celebrate the power of organized global action to reverse ecological harm as evidenced by the 1987 Montreal Protocol to Protect the Ozone Layer — the only treaty to be universally ratified by every country on earth. According to some models, the Montreal Protocol has helped prevent up to two million cases of skin cancer yearly and avoided millions of cataract cases worldwide. Today, the ozone hole still exists, forming every year over Antarctica in the spring and closing up again over the summer, But there’s evidence it’s starting to disappear — and recover. That said, new threats and challenges to the ozone and the climate persist — Even today, don’t use aerosol hair spray! (Our model Signe Knutson - Green Action said she washed her hair with Epsom Salt on Monday and she has a week long process to make it as big as possible!)

  • Next Eco-Drinks is this Wednesday. March 5th! And the first Wednesday of each month thereafter, 5-7PM at Devil May Care Brewing Company (155-A Fort St., Winnipeg). What is Eco-Drinks? Every month people who work in the environmental field and/or citizens concerned about ecological issues meet up at informal sessions known as Eco-Drinks. It is a great way for people to catch up with people they know and also for making new contacts. Everyone is welcome. Everyone invites someone else along, so there’s always a different crowd, making Eco-Drinks an organic, self-organising network. unstructured event, where people can mingle over a beer or other beverage of their choosing. Devil May Care has great local beer, mead and cider! But for those that do not drink alcohol they carry a selection of alcohol-free craft beer in addition to sodas and locally-made kombucha. You can bring your children too, as minors are allowed provide they are accompanied by an adult. Please come, invite a friend, and share with your networks!
