  • Friends of Second Marsh was one of the 2024 recipients of the Invasive Phragmites Control Fund! This organization is committed to protecting and promoting appreciation for Oshawa Second Marsh, its watershed, surrounding natural areas, other Great Lakes wetlands, and the broader natural heritage system. In 2024, their seasonal staff collected monitoring data across 19 management units. Volunteers supported invasive Phragmites removal at McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve through spading, and swamp milkweed seedlings were planted in a previously treated area. By managing invasive Phragmites, Friends of Second Marsh has helped expand natural habitat for a variety of native plants, birds, and wildlife. Their continued efforts in planting and reseeding with native species are enhancing local biodiversity and improving overall habitat quality.
