I’m pleased to announce that Lucas Malinowski has been appointed to the role of Vice-President & Director, Federal Affairs Global Automakers of Canada . In addition to handling things in Ottawa, Lucas will be taking on additional responsibilities for issues management across the country. Join me in congratulating Lucas in his new role.

It was helpful to speak with CBC ‘s Anis Robert Heydari yesterday as disquieting rumours swirled around Honda Canada Inc.’s operations and potential movement to the United States. To be clear: 1. Honda in Alliston is at full production in spite of tariffs 2. Honda has invested billions in Canada and has never laid off an employee over their 40 year history here. 2. Because the vehicles they build are USMCA compliant, the tariff on Alliston-built vehicles going into the U.S. is reduced by the American content reducing the tariff to probably 12.5%….. when other countries are paying a 25% tariff to bring there vehicles into the U.S. . 3. Are the tariffs illegal and unwarranted ? Yes. Could they have been worse? Yes. Relatively speaking Canadian-produced vehicles going into the U.S. should have a competitive advantage . One week in on the roller coaster 🎢 ride that is 🇺🇸 auto tariffs as well as the implementation of 🇨🇦 retaliatory tariffs. The next shoe👞 to fall will be the application of 🇺🇸 tariffs to auto parts - which while announced; were delayed until May 3rd for the U.S. to figure out the details. More challenges and, no doubt, confusion to come. Keep in mind that these Sec. 232 auto tariffs are a comple violation of the automotive side letters to the CUSMA/USMCA . It was a bit of a challenge to sort out in real time, the impact on Canada 🇨🇦 of the President’s 90 day pause on “reciprocal” tariffs. As Canada was not on the original list for these tariffs, the pause does not affect Canada directly. BUT we still have : - the so-called “fentanyl and immigration” tariffs being applied - the steel and aluminum tariffs being applied, and - the auto tariffs being applied with the application of tariffs on Canadian auto parts yet to come on May 3rd Thanks to host Andrew Nichols CBC for having me on to discuss all of this.

Chaotic day as U.S. tariffs take hold and markets plummet as a result (and as predicted!). Presumably the President might pay heed to an economist that he recognized with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Dr. Laffer was given this award for his contribution to Economics, during Trump’s first term in office.
