Jim Goodman brought together a fantastic panel today on the final day of the ICMC 2025 conference: “Tales From the Front Lines of the First Wave of Quantum-Safe Manufacturing.” He gathered industry leaders who are at the forefront of the migration toward post-quantum readiness: Jason Soroko from Sectigo, David Wheeler, CISSP, GSLC, GREM, CSSLP from Amazon's Kuiper project, Tommy C. Charles from HP, Jeff Andersen from Google's Titan & Caliptra and Jim Last from AMD. They came together to share both the successes and the challenges they've encountered on the journey to becoming "quantum-ready." Some of my personal highlights: Jim Last shared with the audience that having access to our HSM software emulator had been a critical factor in enabling his team to achieve key project milestones. Jason Soroko made a powerful point about the importance of cross-functional collaboration for successful deployments of crypto-agile HSMs in modern computing environments. He emphasized the need for coordination between developers, infrastructure operators, and cryptographic experts—Cryptographic Center of Excellence. I especially appreciated Dave Wheeler’s insight on the difficulties they faced after selecting XMSS over LMS, particularly due to the lack of FIPS validation for XMSS. We went through a similar debate years ago and ultimately chose LMS as the best fit for our own design. One common theme echoed by everyone on the panel was the importance of taking a conservative approach to cryptographic choices when it comes to achieving true quantum-readiness. Each panellist shared that they had deliberately selected the most conservative algorithms for their firmware update processes and ensured their PQC Root of Trust (RoT) was injected during manufacturing. We couldn’t agree more. We've been using LMS for our firmware updates since 2019, and every QxHSM we’ve manufactured to date has had its Root of Trust injected at the factory.
