Our next CIFAR Talks has been announced! Join us on April 24 (12-1 p.m. ET) for CIFAR Talks: Memory & the Malleable Mind Early critical periods of life, like childhood, are periods of brain plasticity with big implications for memory. How do we form and retain memories during these periods, and why does infantile amnesia take our earliest memories? Hear from leading CIFAR researchers as they discuss how childhood memory works and why it fades. Speakers: 🔹 Alison Gopnik, Advisor/Fellow, Child & Brain Development and Learning in Machines & Brains, University of California, Berkeley 🔹 Sarah Power, PhD, Child & Brain Development, Next Generation Trainee, Max Planck Institute for Human Development 🔹 Tomás Ryan, CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar 2020-2022, Child & Brain Development, Trinity College Dublin Hosted by Jennifer Moore Rattray, BA, MPA, ICD.D, CIFAR Board Director Moderated by science journalist Sara Reardon Don’t miss this fascinating discussion! Artificial intelligence has changed the world — but long before its breakthroughs made headlines, #CIFAR invested in its potential. More than 40 years ago, CIFAR foresaw the impact #AI would have on our world and launched the AI, Robotics & Society program. In 2004, CIFAR launched Learning in Machines & Brains. Today, CIFAR Fellows and AI leaders Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun continue to push the boundaries of AI. Want to hear their thoughts on the past, present and future of AI? More than 40 years ago, #CIFAR foresaw the impact AI would have on our world and launched the program AI, Robotics & Society. In 2004, CIFAR launched Learning in Machines & Brains. Through these programs — and during decades when research on neural networks was met with skepticism — CIFAR supported the cutting-edge work of researchers including Yoshua Bengio (Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute), Geoffrey Hinton, Yann LeCun and Rich Sutton (Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii)). Their breakthroughs in deep learning earned them the A.M. Turing Award, and Geoffrey Hinton went on to receive The Nobel Prize Prize in Physics for his cutting-edge work. We sat down with these visionary leaders to discuss their work and how CIFAR has played a pivotal role in advancing #AI. 📺: https://lnkd.in/gVJxGnmB #ArtificialIntelligence #MachineLearning #DeepLearning #NeuralNetworks #TuringAward #NobelPrize #Research #Innovation

📺: https://lnkd.in/gw5-Q6Mq

With the next season of #TheLastOfUs just around the corner, the threat of brain-invading fungi is back in the spotlight. Though none have exhibited zombie-inducing behaviours in humans, fungal pathogens are becoming increasingly fatal. We spoke with Leah Cowen (University of Toronto), Co-Director of #CIFAR's Fungal Kingdom Program, to unpack why fungal infections are on the rise and what they mean for human and brain health.
