🎉 We recently won a local business award and they requested that I prepare a short acceptance speech. I absolutely do not want to be long-winded so I kept it under 2 minutes, but I also wanted to take the opportunity to summarize what I think building a business is all about. Here’s what I conveyed with my 2 minute speech: Being a business owner is more than an opportunity to make money, it’s an opportunity to create a space for others to thrive. Your business gets to be the best reflection of yourself and you can build it your way. For me, that was outlining some key values that I try to live up to every day. When I started Avalon, I set the parameters for success - 1. Providing great service to clients at a reasonable price, 2. Treating employees with respect and having them share in our success, 3. Being profitable, and 4. Living a balanced life. I can happily say today that the hard work is paying off. It is possible to have it all: • You can create a workplace where people are excited to show up and build a profitable business. • You don’t have to work long hours endlessly to stay afloat • You can combat the loneliness of entrepreneurship by articulating your values for others to share and participate in. Avalon would not be where it is today without the efforts of our community of clients, team members and vendors (past and present). Outlining our shared values to create a space where that community can thrive has been my biggest contribution to our success and I think that is within the reach of any business owner.
