Yesterday a team from Pacific Life Re and UnderwriteMe spent the morning volunteering with our partner charity Thames21 as part of their habitat restoration work. The group met at Sutcliffe Park in South London and spent time felling some of the willow trees that needed to be cleared by the riverbank. This surprisingly hard work was rewarded by the knowledge that we were extending the lifespan of the trees which will regrow, and their roots will help bind and retain the riverbanks. The felled trees were then moved to an area to rot down and become a haven for wildlife. The team also created willow faggots which are tight bundles of small diameter willow used to reduce soil erosion along the riverbank as they slow the flow of the water. Thank you so much to the very knowledgeable and experienced team from Thames21. It was great to be outdoors on such a beautiful day doing something that will have a lasting impact on that part of the river. It was a real pleasure to host the ‘World of Work’ session organised by The Access Project with such a bright group of students. Our panel shared their very different career journeys which included being the first in their family to go to university, moving countries for a new job, and changing occupations altogether. They all shared how important it was to be open to new opportunities and seize them when they present themselves. The students asked so many inciteful questions and shared their own ambitions for their next steps. We then spent time undertaking mock interviews to help prepare them for university applications. We also promoted the world of reinsurance and showed that it can provide some great career opportunities – something that, funnily enough, none of them had thought of! Thank you to The Access Project for enabling this event to happen and supporting the PL Re mentors and tutors who are working with individual students.
