  • 19th-Century Lock Discovered at Noordkasteel. During excavation works for the Oosterweel connection, city archaeologists uncovered a remarkable 19th-century water lock at the former Fort Noordkasteel. This impressive brick structure regulated the flow of the Schijn River through the historic fortress into the Schelde. The discovery provides a rare glimpse into the sheer scale of Noordkasteel, once a crucial part of Antwerp’s defenses. Despite its age, the lock remains in good condition and is now being thoroughly documented. The Oosterweel junction, a key piece of Antwerp’s mobility project, will soon link the Schelde Tunnel with the Canal Tunnels, completing the city’s Ring Road. As construction progresses, archaeologists continue to investigate the site, hoping to uncover more hidden stories from Antwerp’s past.
