🧬 CHIMERNA: a new chapter in RNA-driven cancer therapy Colorectal cancer claims nearly 250,000 lives in Europe each year, making it the continent’s second deadliest cancer. While immunotherapy holds promise, cost, delivery, and efficacy challenges still hinder clinical progress. The CHIMERNA project, led by Prof. Karine Breckpot, offers a new strategy: a subcutaneously implantable hydrogel that provides controlled release of immune cell-attracting agents and precise, targeted mRNA polymeric nanomedicines. The aim? To enable immune cells within the patient to respond more effectively to cancer. 💬 “𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘵𝘰 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘴. 🚀 New Research on Melanoma Treatment – Funded by Kom op tegen Kanker 🚀 Prof. dr. Bart Neyns and PhD student Dr. Jolien Kessels have received funding from Kom op tegen Kanker to explore a smarter, more personalized approach to treating high-risk early-stage #melanoma patients. 🔬 The Challenge: Over the past decade, new #treatments like immunotherapy have greatly improved survival rates for melanoma patients. Unfortunately, not all patients benefit from the treatment, 40% experience side effects and doctors currently can’t predict who will respond well 📢 The hypothesis: This study will test a new approach—giving immunotherapy before sentinel lymph node surgery instead of after. Why? ✅ It helps us understand how melanoma cells behave in the body ✅ It could reduce unnecessary treatments for patients who don’t need them ✅ It helps doctors better identify high-risk patients who do need extra care ✅ It also looks at quality of life and brain health during treatment This research is a collaboration between UZ Brussel’s Oncology, Surgery, and Dermatology departments, BRIGHTcore & Translational Oncology Research Centre 🤝 This study is a step toward more effective, personalized cancer treatment, giving the right care to the right patients at the right time. 💛 Huge thanks to Kom op tegen Kanker for making this possible! #Melanoma #CancerResearch #Immunotherapy #PersonalizedMedicine #KomOpTegenKanker #UZBrussel #UMCOR #UMCORcommunity #VUBhealthcampus #healthresearch

Enhancing existential care for #COPD patients and their families 👩🔬 Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (#COPD) is the third leading global cause of death, significantly impacting the #qualityoflife of both patients and their families in the end-of-life stages. Existing palliative care interventions predominantly focus on physical symptoms and do not take into account #existentialneeds, despite documented #suffering of both patients and their carers. With their recently approved Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen (FWO) Senior Research Project EXIST-COPD, Prof. dr. Koen Pardon, Prof. dr. em. Luc Deliens and dr. Frederick Daenen from our End-of-Life Care Research Group will tackle this important gap, in collaboration with Prof. dr. Yvonne Engels from Radboud University Medical Center. The project team will measure the existential #wellbeing of patients and carers, as well as their relation to quality of life, while they will add existential components to a novel palliative care intervention. Congratulations to Prof. dr. Koen Pardon, Prof. dr. em. Luc Deliens and dr. Frederick Daenen for winning this important grant! #VUBhealthcampus #UMCOR #UMCORcommunity #healthresearch

We are proud to announce that Prof. dr. Dimitri De Bundel and Prof. dr. Maria Bjerke have been awarded €300.000, Prof. dr. Chris Baeken has secured €300.000, and Prof. dr. Jorne Laton has received €110.000 in research funding from Stichting Alzheimer Onderzoek / Fondation Recherche Alzheimer (SAO). This support is part of SAO's €4.53 million investment in 20 Belgian fundamental and clinical research projects. The funded projects are based within our Experimental Pharmacology - Vrije Universiteit Brussel, NEUR Research group and AIMS (Artificial Intelligence supported Modelling in clinical Sciences) research groups. 💬 “We are investigating whether #psilocybin, through its effects on inflammation and neurotrophic signalling, can help address both #cognitivedecline and #depressivesymptoms in Alzheimer’s disease. This is fundamental research that may guide future therapeutic directions,” says Prof. De Bundel. The three-year project will also involve a postdoctoral researcher funded by a EUTOPIA-SRIF fellowship. 💬 “We are examining whether non-invasive brain #stimulation can support memory and cognitive functions in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Our aim is to contribute to treatments that are accessible, safe and improve patients’ quality of life,” explains Prof. Chris Baeken. 💬 “The structure of the brain helps us make a diagnosis, but it tells us little about where the disease is going. By looking at real-time brain activity, we hope to uncover more reliable predictors of cognitive decline,” says dr. Laton, who will investigate a #multimodal biomarker to predict cognitive decline in people with mild #cognitiveimpairment. We extend our congratulations to our researchers, and thank Stichting Alzheimer Onderzoek / Fondation Recherche Alzheimer for their continued support of brain health research 🧠 #VUBhealthcampus #UMCOR #UMCORcommunity #healthresearch #AlzheimersResearch #Neuroscience

Put your hands together for our #WednesdayWinners! 🥇 In March, the annual European Society of Molecular Imaging (#EMIM2025) meeting took place in Bilbao, Spain, with over 1,000 participants—the largest international conference in this field. Around 15 VUB researchers affiliated to MITH Brussel attended the conference, with Prof. Nick Devoogdt serving on the scientific board. Dr. Timo De Groof was elected chair of the Onco-Immunology and Therapy study group for the next two years, while several team members chaired scientific sessions. 🎉 Four MITH Brussel researchers won prestigious poster awards, highlighting cutting-edge molecular imaging research: Evelyn Calderon Espinosa: S100A9 plays a cell-specific role in the bone marrow-lung cancer crosstalk. Sam Floru, Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen (FWO)-fellow: Validation of a fluorescently-labeled anti-CEA Nanobody in an in vivo radiation-induced fibrotic colorectal tumor model. dr. Kirsten De Ridder: Mapping of the tumor autonomic innervation during murine lung cancer progression. dr. Łukasz Mateusiak: Breaking the Nanosecond Barrier: Antibody-based tumor imaging with extended-lifetime fluorescent tracers – A promise for enhanced multiplexing. 🎉 Another major recognition goes to Dr. Silke François, MD in Gastroenterology, for receiving the Best Original Manuscript award from Acta Gastro-Enterologica Belgica. Her study, comparing two leading Helicobacter pylori eradication therapies in Belgium, showed suboptimal eradication rates in both groups with no significant improvement in the bismuth-based group. These results question the cost-effectiveness of this expensive non-reimbursed treatment and confirm the need of nationwide monitoring of resistance patterns. Congratulations to all! 👏 #VUBhealthcampus #UMCOR #UMCORcommunity #healthresearch
