  • [Clean mobility] As decarbonization deadlines under the Clean Vehicle Directive and CO₂ Standards for Heavy Duty Vehicles approach, the time for bus fleet operators to choose a zero-emission path forward is now 🍃🌎 Will you opt for battery-electric or fuel cell electric technology? 🚌 Both options have their strengths and will be part of the overall solution. For instance, the latest JIVE report (July 2024) on “The Potential for Hydrogen Buses in Europe” reveals that 20% of European bus routes cannot be efficiently served by battery-electric buses. Operational needs, such as driving range, shifts or climate conditions, will help define the best choice. The experts from SympH₂ony, a joint venture between Messer SE & Co. KGaA and Toyota Tsusho Europe, share key factors to consider when evaluating zero-emission technologies, whether battery-electric or fuel cell electric buses. • True or false: The cost of recharging or refueling is generally lower for battery-electric buses than for fuel cell electric buses.    ✅ This is true for small fleets (typically < 20 buses).   💡 However, according to a study published in 2021 by the @Center for Transportation and The Environment, as a fleet grows, the charging infrastructure for battery-electric buses, among other things, becomes increasingly costly and complex, while hydrogen refueling infrastructure is easier and more cost-effective to expand, making fuel cell electric buses a better choice for larger fleets.   Read more about these zero-emission technologies in the article written by experts from SympH₂ony, a joint venture between Messer SE & Co. • There is a night and day difference between battery-electric buses and fuel cell electric buses 🌚🌞   When charging battery-electric buses (BEBs) for several hours overnight, the grid power purchased doesn’t necessarily come from renewable sources. As a result, BEBs may be charged with a proportion of non-renewable or even fossil fuel based electricity ⚡   Fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs), however, use hydrogen that can be generated when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining. Electrolyzers are flexible production assets and can be operated to produce hydrogen when renewable power is available, ensuring a supply of both green and affordable electricity. Unlike electricity, hydrogen can be stored and used to quickly refuel vehicles as needed.   Do you want to learn more and stay ahead of the curve?
