Farming isn’t just about what grows above the ground. It’s about the unseen life beneath it! 🌱🪱✨ At Estancia San Gregorio, Argentina, we joined forces with LaEnmienda for a hands-on workshop and awareness raising action with the farm' staff to dive into the world of #livingsoil, #composting and #microbiology. We got our hands dirty (literally!) while: 🧪 Collecting soil samples to establish a biological baseline, because you can’t improve what you don’t measure. 🍄 Creating high-biodiversity compost using agropiro, alfalfa and cattle manure to foster healthier, biologically active soils. 🔄 Exploring how biological amendments can reduce reliance on synthetic inputs while enhancing soil structure and carbon sequestration. This workshop wasn’t just about learning, it was about taking action. We're setting the stage for a small-scale trial to test these practices before exploring ways to scale them up. Some reflections looking back on Agro en Punta. Events like this provide a great opportunity for networking and sharing valuable moments with fellow agricultural professionals — special mention to Gorlero & Cía, our two-year in a row stand partners, masters of the asado! 👏 One of the key takeaways came from Marcelo Arriola's talk, where he emphasized the importance of designing #ProductiveLandscapes, highlighting its essential pillars: 🚜 Transition to no-till – preserving soil structure, reducing erosion and enhancing carbon sequestration 🌿 Intensification – because soil doesn’t need to “rest”— in fact, fallow land can accelerate organic matter depletion, lead to soil degradation and increase weed resistance 🔄 Diversification – integrating multi-species mixes, combining pastures and crops and ensuring long-term crop and livestock rotations 🪱 Balanced nutrition – fertilisation is only one way to feed the soil —biological activity, organic matter and crop residues also play crucial roles! ⏳ Time – agriculture is built slowly but can be degraded in the blink of an eye. Rounding off the year with a great field tour in San Gregorio Farm, Argentina 🇦🇷 The dynamics and dedication of the team are equal to the challenges of this #regenerative transition that began 5 years ago. Today, we're deeply grateful for the results achieved on the ground! Here is an extract from the main action levers implemented on this 4,000 ha farm in the wet pampas region: 🍀 Increased #diversity in the crop rotation. Harvest time on our #agroforestry plot! 🌳 The tree rows parade merrily alongside the combine doing its job in the #organic maize crop. 🌾 Our walnut trees are almost 4 years old now and are growing very well, in harmony with the succession of organic crops and pastures, all managed in a #regenerative agroforestry system. 🍀
