Today, 38 participants agreed to join a Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MMoU) on strengthening the global geodesy supply chain.   Participants are from Member State government departments and agencies, private sector companies, organizations, associations, and academic institutions, together with the United Nations Global Geodetic Centre of Excellence (UN-GGCE).   “I am very pleased at the number of initial participants we have and I am even happier with the feedback we have had from people explaining what a great opportunity the MMOU was for them to go their managers or ministers and talk about the importance of geodesy", says Nick Brown, Head of Office, UN-GGCE. The MMoU becoming operative was annouced during the Joint UN-GGIM Subcommittee on Geodesy 5th Plenary and the 3rd UN-GGCE International Advisory Committee which takes place in Bonn this week.

🌍 Strengthening Global Geodesy Governance in Bonn 📍 From March 10-14, 2025, geodetic experts and policymakers will gather at the UN Campus in Bonn for the 5th Plenary Meeting of the UN-GGIM Subcommittee on Geodesy and the 3rd Meeting of the United Nations Global Geodetic Centre of Excellence (UN-GGCE) International Advisory Committee. These sessions are crucial in advancing the 1st Joint Development Plan for Global Geodesy and shaping the future of geodesy governance, capacity development, and infrastructure resilience. UN-GGIM: Europe will be well represented! 💡 Ingrid Vanden Berghe, Co-Chair of the UN-GGCE International Advisory Committee, will help guide discussions on international geodetic governance. 💡 Jeffrey Verbeurgt, Chair of GRF Europe, will present updates on European geodetic initiatives and participate in strategic discussions on regional coordination. Key topics include: 🔹 Strengthening geodesy governance at national and global levels 🔹 Ensuring the long-term accuracy and reliability of geodetic infrastructure 🔹 Building a robust global geodesy supply chain 🔹 Improving political engagement and awareness of geodesy's critical role These discussions will shape international geodesy policies and define Europe’s contributions to global geospatial initiatives. Op de website van het United Nations Global Geodetic Centre of Excellence (UN-GGCE) is het eerste gezamenlijke ontwikkelingsplan voor de wereldwijde geodesie gepubliceerd 👏 👉 https://lnkd.in/eFHvyGJc Voor het eerst is een wereldwijd actieplan opgesteld om de geodesie, de fundamentele discipline waarop alle geospatiale informatie is gebaseerd, structureel te versterken. Het NGI heeft actief bijgedragen aan het behalen van dit grote succes voor de wereldwijde geodetische gemeenschap, vakkundig geregisseerd door het UN-GGCE Centre, dat sinds 2023 in Bonn actief is. Het plan zal de VN-lidstaten en partners helpen om gerichte investeringen te doen in infrastructuur, capaciteit en internationale samenwerking. Deze gemeenschappelijke aanpak is erop gericht de betrouwbaarheid en duurzaamheid te garanderen van infrastructuren die essentieel zijn voor gezaghebbende geografische informatie. Concreet definieert het plan strategische doelstellingen en tastbare acties om de geodetische infrastructuur van de wereld te versterken en robuuster te maken. Het vertaalt de geodetische behoeften van lidstaten en partners in een plan dat is ontworpen om de coördinatie, veerkracht en duurzaamheid van de wereldwijde geodetische toeleveringsketen te verbeteren. Le premier plan de développement conjoint de la géodésie mondiale est publié sur le site Internet du United Nations Global Geodetic Centre of Excellence (UN-GGCE) 👉 https://lnkd.in/eBtmFQT3 👏 🌎 Pour la première fois, un plan d’action mondial est mis en place pour renforcer structurellement la géodésie, la discipline fondamentale sur laquelle repose toute l’information géospatiale. L’IGN a contribué activement à la réalisation de ce succès majeur pour la communauté géodésique mondiale savamment orchestré par le Centre UN-GGCE en activité à Bonn depuis 2023. Le plan permettra d’aider les États membres de l’ONU et les partenaires à réaliser des investissements ciblés dans les infrastructures, les capacités et la coopération internationale. Cette approche commune vise à garantir la fiabilité et la durabilité d’infrastructures essentielles à une information géographique faisant autorité. Concrètement, le plan définit des objectifs stratégiques et des actions tangibles pour renforcer l’infrastructure géodésique mondiale et la rendre plus robuste. Il traduit les besoins géodésiques des États membres et des partenaires en un plan conçu pour améliorer la coordination, la résilience et la durabilité de la chaîne d’approvisionnement géodésique mondiale. Is België voorbereid op meer en intensere natuurbranden?   Over dit thema bereidde het NGI - Nationaal Geografisch Instituut onder supervisie van Cerac - Climate Risk Assessment Center een rapport voor dat de beschikbare informatie rond dit thema samenbrengt. Alles wijst erop dat het risico op natuurbranden door klimaatverstoring zal toenemen in de volgende 15-20 jaar en het risico toenemen en het risico op gelijktijdige uitbraken op verschillende locaties (zoals in 2011) vergroot. Natuurbranden zijn wel degelijk een bedreiging  voor ons land. De waarschuwingsmechanismen en de bewustwording rond deze problematiek moet een efficiënte bestrijding mogelijk maken.   Naar de toekomst toe moet de fijnmazigheid van de aanbevelingen en het in kaart brengen nog verbeteren. De meeste branden in ons land zijn immers vaak kleinschalig en worden daardoor nu vaak laattijdig gedetecteerd.
