Enabling digital health adoption for hospitals, pharma and medtech companies

"Reimbursement of digital health solutions in Europe." That was the topic of a panel conversation I joined at DMEA - Connecting Digital Health in Berlin yesterday, Europe’s largest health IT event with over 20,000 participants! I was asked to reflect on the situation in Belgium and the Netherlands, and to share how moveUP - digital therapies is positioning itself across different countries. 💡 Some key takeaways and reflections: 🇪🇺 Fragmentation is still the rule in Europe; each country has its own approach, sometimes innovative, mostly slow (let that not be an excuse!). 🔸 France's PECAN has only one (1!) solution reimbursed so far. 🔸 Germany’s DiGA momentum has cooled down. 🔸 Austria is now rolling out an improved DiGA concept, including payment for HCPs and digital prescriptions instead of paperwork. 🔸 The Netherlands remains the most structured and collaborative system—great opportunities for those who can bring efficiency and engage both insurers and care providers. 💶 Reimbursement is only possible when value is clear: Payers are moving beyond clinical validation—they demand proof of cost-effectiveness. 📊 Real-World Data (RWD) is gaining traction to complement RCTs, especially to demonstrate better care pathway efficiency, reduced hospitalizations, improved therapy adherence 📈 Telemonitoring is a bright spot This segment is seeing faster reimbursement adoption in several countries. We’re seeing real traction here—and it's no coincidence that’s where moveUP - digital therapies is currently scaling the most. 🇧🇪 But I also felt kind of proud talking about Belgium. Looking at the glass half full: ✅ There’s now a systemic framework for expanding reimbursement across therapeutic areas. Chronic heart failure was first. Oncology is next. The 3rd level of the mHealth pyramid is alive again. ✅ Tele-rehabilitation is getting formalized too—finally moving towards general, structured reimbursement mid 2026 ✅ Important data integration work is underway: linking outpatient digital programs with hospital electronic health records, enabling primary but also secondary use of data that benefits current and future patients. Great work from people actively contributing to the @telemonitoringprescription initiative. We're still scratching the surface, but acceleration is visible & the potential is huuuge. Thank you all for your contributions and let's keep the momentum! 👍 beMedTech MEDVIA pharma.be Agoria RIZIV-INAMI FOD Volksgezondheid/SPF Santé Publique eHealth platform @KCE @HDA and all companies in this space pulling initiatives where quality of care is measured and care providers/institutions are supported (also financially!) to provide the best care/cost ratio! •  📲 Connected Care: Transforming Shoulder Surgery Recovery For many patients, recovering from rotator cuff surgery can feel overwhelming. But at Cliniques de l'Europe / Europa Ziekenhuizen , a new approach is changing the game. Thanks to the moveUP app, patients receive continuous remote support, guiding them through each step of their rehabilitation. Barbara, one of the first to use the program, shared how it gave her confidence: "It felt like a real safety net. The app kept me motivated, helped track my pain, and even connected me with a nurse when I needed it most." This milestone makes Cliniques de l’Europe the first hospital in French-speaking Belgium to introduce telemonitoring for these patients. Led by Dr. Mathias Colman and nurse coordinator Jonathan Cortes, and supported by the Federal Public Service Health, this innovation is transforming post-operative care—making recovery not just smoother, but smarter. #digitalhealth #moveUP #Patientsupport

  • 📣 Key Priorities for the Future of Health Data – Insights from Our Interactive Panel Yesterday, we brought together experts from hospitals, policy, industry, and research to discuss the next steps for digital health and patient data at the health data summit.  The session, moderated by our Ward Servaes , sparked dynamic discussions and deep audience interaction. 💡 Meet the Experts:  ✅ Dr. Maarten Michiels (Head of Abdominal Surgery, AZ Mol) – Offering a clinical perspective on how data impacts daily patient care. ✅ Ilke Montag (Policy Advisor, Solidaris, BIHR) – Highlighting policy barriers and enablers in the evolving regulatory landscape.  ✅ Vincent Seynhaeve, M.D.  (Country Medical Director, Pfizer) – Discussing the pharma industry's role in leveraging data for better health outcomes.  ✅ Hans Constandt (CoFounder & CEO, FAQIR Institute) – Exploring the importance of data governance and ethical AI in healthcare. ✅  Ben De Meester (Researcher Semantic Web, IDLab, IMEC, Gent) – Demonstrating how semantic technologies can unlock true interoperability. That together with the interaction of a diverse audience gave us a broad perspective on the opportunities in digital health and quality health data. Apart from diving deep into actual projects which are showing of tangible results for patients and all stakeholders already, we also looked to the future. And this brings in some call to actions to an audience much broader than just the conference. ❓ What are the top priorities? We asked our audience to vote on their top priorities for driving change in health data. Here’s what stood out:  🏆 #1 Priority – A coordination force is needed to bring change management all the way into the field. Without clear leadership on all levels, adoption remains fragmented.  🏆#2 Priority – The financing & legal system for hospitals and care givers  needs reform to better support value-based healthcare (VBHC) and large scale innovation, as for example seen in The Netherlands. 🏆 #3 Priority – Government funding should focus on scaling existing innovations, not just creating high potential new ones. Other key points:  ✔️ Trust and transparency – Share the value of sharing data with all stakeholders (sharing is caring).  ✔️ Stronger awareness – We need to involve all stakeholders to learn the positive impact of data driven digital health. ✔️  Practical use cases – Showcasing the benefits of real-world implementations is essential. Next Steps? This session proves that collaboration is key to overcoming fragmentation in health data. "It is a mindset, which needs leadership" @Tom Braekeleirs Let’s continue the work together to drive real impact! 💬  What do you think is the biggest opportunity to improve data driven digital health adoption? Drop your thoughts below!
