  • Bisphenol-A and drinking water: EurEau's position While BPA exposure is mainly through food, its presence in drinking water must not be overlooked. ✅ We welcome the EU-wide ban on BPA in food contact materials. 🚫 But more is needed: a full REACH restriction should follow. 🕒 And as BPA limits under the Drinking Water Directive are revised, drinking water suppliers need realistic timeframes in which to adapt. Let’s ensure clean, safe water with a strong, future-proof chemicals policy. 📄 Read our position paper: https://lnkd.in/efyg4jUM

  • Trilogue agreement reached on a minimalist EU Soil Law After lengthy negotiations, co-legislators have reached a trilogue agreement on the Soil Monitoring Directive. While this is a first step toward assessing soil health across the EU, the outcome falls short of what’s needed to truly protect and restore Europe’s soils. ⚠️ No binding targets for soil improvement ⚠️ Minimal EU-wide harmonisation — Member States can define “healthy” soil individually ⚠️ A watch list of soil pollutants, including PFAS and pesticides, remains only indicative Healthy soils are vital — not only for agriculture, but also for protecting our water resources, building climate resilience, and mitigating the effects of droughts and floods. We urge stronger ambition going forward. Europe’s soils—and our future—deserve better.

  • EurEau Position Paper on TFA TFA is a very persistent, very mobile member of the PFAS group of chemicals. Due to its numerous emissions pathways, TFA is now ubiquitous in the water cycle and hard to remove by conventional water treatments. The EU should recognise the urgent necessity to stop TFA emissions to the environment as a first step towards addressing this pollution. Because TFA is an atypical PFAS, the catch-all “PFAS Total” parameter is inadequate for TFA. A specific TFA limit value in drinking water should be set based on health-derived criteria. Where this value would require additional drinking water treatment, these costs should be borne by the polluters. You can read our position paper on why TFA should be phased out here: https://lnkd.in/eQTQnm26

Second day of the EurEau ENCM meeting coming to a close here in Malta. Honoured to have been able to join such wonderful communicators and policy advocates on all things water related from across Europe. Great sharing of knowledge and experience on subjects ranging from PFAS to Reverse Osmosis to SWO! There was also some lively exchanges on how to promote the high quality of our tap water. My thanks to the always incredible Caroline Greene for organising two days packed full of meaningful knowledge exchange and to all the speakers who shared their experiences so generously. Of course, final and biggest thanks go to Pablo and his colleagues from Water Services Corporation - Malta who were such fabulous hosts and who shared their underground reservoir and RO water treatment plant to us, as well as sharing their plans and campaigns. Best of luck with the new marketing campaign! I look forward to putting my newfound knowledge to good use back in Uisce Éireann Irish Water Since Covid, the true value of these face to face meetings has been largely discounted but spending time in the company of such committed water colleagues has no equal.

📨 Companies across sectors have written to Ursula von der Leyen, asking the #EU Commission to deliver an ambitious revision of REACH that prevents harm from chemicals and avoids "circular pollution". ✒️ The companies signing the letter want a strong #REACH to phase out the most harmful chemicals. This is the only way to move towards a competitive circular economy where recycled materials can be trusted, they write.   🧡 And we agree — a strong #chemicals regulation drives innovation and rewards responsible companies. The EU's competitiveness must be built on future-proof chemicals and innovations — we cannot compete with yesterday’s solutions.   👉🏾 Read the companies’ letter to Ursula von der Leyen and her Commissioners here: https://lnkd.in/dHfsin5R ROCKWOOL GroupPolestarIKEATarkettPaxymer ABDecathlon Ragn-SellsMarshall GroupIDUN MineralsHazardous Waste EuropeNudie JeansCoop DanmarkEurEauChemSec
