💡How can we make the energy system more affordable—without compromising on climate targets? Wind and solar may be the lowest-cost solutions today, but they’re only part of the answer. 🎙️Hear from Malin Östman (Wärtsilä, Wärtsilä Energy) as she explains why building an affordable, reliable, and decarbonised energy system means investing in #balancingtechnologies too. ⚖️ With increasing focus on balancing seasonal and even yearly weather variations (#Dunkelflaute), engine power plants stand ready to deliver decarbonised, flexible electricity and heat. However, progress remains slow due to limited #hydrogen and #renewablegas availability. Hear from Dr. Andreas Kunz (INNIO Group) as he shares insights on their innovative power-to-X-to-power projects designed to unlock the potential of hydrogen for a more resilient energy system. 👉 The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has just launched a call for evidence on Innovative Hydrogen to Power (H2P) Projects. Some background: ✅ In the UK, #H2P is considered a "critical component of the future electricity system". ✅ The UK Clean Power 2030 Action Plan projects a need of 40- 50 GW of dispatchable and long-duration flexible capacity in 2030. ✅ A Hydrogen to Power Business Model (H2PBM) should de-risk investment by mitigating identified key deployment barriers. ✍ Input can be provided until 12 May.
Pleased to publish the call for evidence seeking technical evidence on innovative hydrogen to power projects which can deliver electricity from hydrogen-fuelled generation by 2030, ahead of large-scale hydrogen infrastructure. The call for evidence will be open until 12th May 2025. Great work from the DESNZ hydrogen to power team in driving forward policy at pace to support this key low carbon dispatchable generation technology! https://lnkd.in/ek-Dg23r

🤔 How can we make energy supply more affordable, sustainable, and secure? One solution lies in #microgrids —they enable businesses to seamlessly integrate different energy sources for maximum efficiency while enhancing energy independence. Hear from Michael Stipa (Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG) as he explains how microgrids empower companies to optimise their energy mix and take control of their own power generation. EUGINE – The European Engine Power Plants Association reposted this
This week Assiet Aren ( Caterpillar Inc., EUGINE – The European Engine Power Plants Association) and I presented the #FMI Standard as common model exchange format for at the ENTSO-E Grid Connection Stakeholder Committee (Please find the link to the slides in the comments) This addresses the need for a standardized, tool-independent model exchange format between grid operators and power plant manufacturers, beyond proprietary solutions and existing standardization efforts that are not broadly supported by the specialized tool vendors. The FMI standard supported by 230+ tools could be boost the efficiency of simulation in the power systems domain!

📢 A holistic approach is key when designing support schemes. Policymakers must consider the bigger picture to effectively tackle the energy investment challenge. 🎯 Hear from Malin Östman (Wärtsilä) as she shares insights on the importance of well-structured policies and support schemes. As she puts it: "If we create a patchwork of support schemes or policies that target each technology and solution individually, we’re going to end up wasting money." To learn more, watch the video below, recorded at our #EUGINE10Years anniversary event last year 🎥⬇️ #Stateaid #Decentralisedpower #FlexibilityxCompetitiveness

Yesterday the European #EnergyCouncil discussed the Action Plan for #AffordableEnergy. In the last months, #gaspower has been repeatedly be blamed for high prices. While it is undeniable that a correlation exists between gas and electricity prices, some #facts need nevertheless to be clarified. This is the first installment of a series that aims at opening a debate on affordable energy and gas power. 👉 How often does gas power set the price in electricity markets?

The European Commission released its draft #CleanIndustrialDeal #StateAid Framework for consultation (see here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eFJ2jBdz). 🗣️ The need for well-functioning markets and business models for clean, flexible power generation was one of the key topics discussed at our 10-year anniversary event last year. As our President, Kari Hietanen from Wärtsilä, highlighted, there remains a critical lack of incentives to invest in firm, flexible capacity. Addressing this challenge requires action. #Capacitymechanisms that reward flexibility are one way to bridge the funding gap, while making wholesale #electricitymarkets more flexible and granular is another. Learn what we have to say in the video below 🎥⬇️ #EUGINE10Years #Decentralisedpower #FlexibilityxCompetitiveness

#EnergySecurity 🔌🔐 Last week, MEP Beata Szydło published her draft report on this key topic. The draft report is the starting point for final positon that should be adopted around Summer, but it already carries some very important messages: ✅Energy security is a key building block of a resilient and competitive economy; ✅Energy security cannot work without adequacy: integration of #flexibility and sufficient #dispatchablecapacity will be crucial; ✅The security of supply architecture should reflect the cross-sectoral integration of the energy system; ✅There is a need to integrate of renewable and low-carbon gases, such as #biomethane and #hydrogen into the framework. 🔗 The draft INI report is available here: https://lnkd.in/eenXbft8 🔗 Read our position and input here: https://lnkd.in/eA5phnRH

🔌 Clean Industrial Deal & Affordable Energy Plan: A Step Forward, But Still Missing the Mark! The European Commission has finally unveiled its long-awaited plans—but are they enough? 💡 Stable energy prices need more than just stable gas prices. A truly affordable and secure system demands decentralised, dispatchable, and decarbonised power. The EU must go further in harnessing this to ensure affordability and security. Read our full reaction and recommendations 👇 #EnergySecurity #CleanIndustrialDeal #Decarbonisation #DispatchablePower #EnergyUnion
