𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐡 rightfully says KAL in an insightful article on the current situation of cash in the Nordics. Our selected key points: ➡️ Norway and Sweden are reintroducing cash as a vital payment method due to security concerns AND are now advocating for cash usage. ➡️ The change is driven by evolving threats like wars and cyber-attacks. ➡️ Citizens are advised to keep a personal cash supply and diversify payment methods. ➡️ In Norway, merchants must accept cash payments, with penalties for non-compliance. Sweden may follow suit. ➡️ The shift highlights the importance of cash for security and financial inclusion, potentially influencing other countries. According to the OECD - OCDE, a resilient economy should provide both digital and cash payment options, guaranteeing secure and inclusive access for all consumers. Our selected highlights of the just released OECD - OCDE "𝘚𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴' 𝘈𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘩 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘺" report, several being highly relevant to the cash management industry: ➡️ The OECD underscores the importance of maintaining cash access points, including ATMs and bank branches, as a key responsibility for governments and financial institutions. This reinforces the ongoing need for CIT services to facilitate cash supply and distribution. ➡️ There should be stronger collaboration between public authorities, financial institutions, and service providers to preserve cash accessibility. CIT companies are essential players in this framework, ensuring secure and efficient cash logistics. ➡️ Certain policy proposals introduce innovative models, such as shared banking hubs or subsidized cash services in underserved areas. These changes may give the opportunity to CIT providers to adapt with more flexible and efficient operational strategies. ➡️ Should regulators implement requirements for businesses to accept cash or mandate a minimum level of cash access points, the demand for CIT services could be sustained or even grow, reinforcing the infrastructure needed to support cash availability. 💶🇩🇪The Deutsche Bundesbank's March 2025 Monthly Report provides an analysis of access to cash in Germany, highlighting the current state and trends in cash availability. In short, while Germany currently maintains a dense network of cash withdrawal facilities, ongoing reductions in bank branches and ATMs, coupled with a growing perception of difficulty in accessing cash, highlight the need for continued efforts to sustain and enhance cash availability nationwide. Our selected highlights of the report: ➡️ The number of bank branches has more than halved since 2002, dropping from approximately 53,000 to around 21,000 in 2023. ➡️ ATMs peaked at about 59,000 in 2018 but have since declined to approximately 51,000. Factors contributing to this reduction include cost pressures, the rise of online banking, and security concerns related to ATM attacks. ➡️ German citizens finding it fairly difficult or very difficult to access an ATM or bank counter increased from 6% in 2021 to 15% in 2023. Despite this, the majority still consider their access to cash to be relatively easy. ➡️ Approximately 6,000 municipalities, encompassing 80.7 million inhabitants (95.7% of the population), have at least one ATM or bank counter. Conversely, around 3.6 million people reside in municipalities without such facilities and must travel elsewhere for cash withdrawals. On average, individuals live 1.4 kilometers from the nearest cash withdrawal facility, with 95.3% having access within a 5-kilometer radius. ➡️ In urban areas, the average distance to the nearest ATM or bank counter is 1.1 kilometers, with 98.1% of the population having access within 5 kilometers. In rural regions, the average distance increases to 1.9 kilometers, and 90.3% of residents have access within 5 kilometers. ➡️ Retailers offering cash withdrawal services complement traditional banking infrastructure. Including these points of sale reduces the average distance to the nearest cash withdrawal facility from 1.4 kilometers to 1.2 kilometers. However, the Deutsche Bundesbank emphasizes that retail cash services should supplement, not replace, bank-provided facilities due to differences in service scope and cash quality control. ➡️ The Deutsche Bundesbank underscores the importance of maintaining a robust cash infrastructure to preserve the public's freedom to choose between cash and digital payment methods. As part of the Eurosystem's cash strategy, the Bundesbank is committed to ensuring that cash remains a viable payment option and store of value. ESTA is celebrating 50 years of existence, and this Anniversary calls for extra attention: we will be focusing on the cash industry and its future challenges – and opportunities - in a “less cash” society. Next ESTA Conference and Exhibition will take place in Brussels, Belgium 11-13 May 2025 on the theme “𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 50 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬?” The global trend towards digitisation is a major challenge for cash and the latest survey from the ECB has shown a further regress of cash payments at POS to 52% in 2024. However, cash resists in some places because people are attached to it. Reducing cash volumes are a challenge for the CIT industry, but the disengagement of commercial banks create opportunities in filling gaps in the cash infrastructure. This will be among the topics that the ESTA conference will discuss and the question of the conference theme will be tackled during the two day’s event by high-ranking industry specialists, EU decision-makers, and other key stakeholders. A large presence of the Cash in Transit companies and suppliers will provide unique networking opportunities throughout the two-day Conference and Exhibition. Although the ESTA conference and exhibition is a member event, non-members can attend subject to ESTAs approval. ⏩ Register now and profit from the early bird rates until 1 April! https://lnkd.in/eFwXkK7Y Warm welcome to Brussels for our 50th Anniversary celebrations. #Cash #LegalTender #AccessToCash #Cashconference #Cashpayments #CITindustry Guillaume Nonain Luis Javier Oro Pradera Miguel Bandrés Stephan Kazes Jacques Temple Paul van der Knaap Antonis Kerastaris Paolo Spollon Michel Tresch Lucie Králová John Apthorpe Nicole Rydén
