We were very fortunate to be invited to join AYO's Music in Me National Mentor Conference last Friday, and to enjoy the positive community atmosphere at Sydney's The Conservatorium High School, on Gadigal Land. It was a privilege to meet and speak with mentors from across Australia, and to share more about the collaborative work we’re doing here at Music Education: Right from the Start. It was also a valuable opportunity to connect the dots between the vital work happening on the ground with primary teachers, and our advocacy and policy efforts to ensure all primary school teachers feel confident and are well-trained to teach music. Thank you to our wonderful collaborators Bernie Heard and Louise Barkl for having us!
Day 2 of the Music in Me National mentor conference. A rich day of learning, Professor Margaret Barrett of Monash University explored the integral role of musical playfulness in children’s learning, her ongoing research in our model of mentoring, and the impact that has on mentors, teachers and students. Dr Robyn Staveley shared her research in cognitive neuroscience, exploring memory and movement and the implications for teaching music. Emily Albert and Judith Bowtell from Music Education: Right from the Start spoke of their work advocating nationally for all young people to have access to quality, sequential music education. Across the two days, we were heartened by the collective’s expertise and generosity, and we recognise the value of building this network of passionate music educators. With thanks to our partners and supporters, especially the Australian Government Office for the Arts, Conservatorium High School, Australian Youth Orchestra, NSW Department of Education.
