On World Water Day, we reflect on the urgent connection between resource use and water security. Last year, Dr. Janez Potocnik, Co-Chair of the UNEP International Resource Panel, highlighted a critical reality: more than 90% of global water stress and biodiversity loss is linked to how we extract and consume materials. NSW has officially become the first state to mandate food organics and garden organics (FOGO) collection—a major move in tackling food waste and landfill pressure. What does this mean? Businesses must comply with FOGO recycling by July 2026, with households to follow from 2030. Right now, 7.6 million tonnes of food waste are generated annually across Australia, with much of it ending up in landfill, releasing harmful emissions.
