If you haven’t already heard - this year the Barossa Valley will be hosting the AFL Gather Round! The $45.7 million upgrade to facilities is all thanks to the State Government and The Barossa Council. The Lyndoch Recreation Park Redevelopment Project has officially transformed the existing oval to meet Australian Rules Football Standards for this major SA event. In 2024, The Barossa Council engaged WGA as civil, geotechnical, structural, and traffic engineers for a full-scale redevelopment with a 14-month timeframe. In collaboration with contractors iEDM, Built., DASH Architects, Lucid Consulting Australia, and Landskap, we ensured the work packages were issued progressively so construction could commence while the design was still being developed. The scope of the works included: • New clubrooms, viewing pavilion, and acrylic netball and tennis courts • Two new ovals • Cricket facilities and athletics facilities • Storm water infrastructure, new carparks and formalised roadway entry • Traffic impact assessment, pedestrian links, exercise equipment areas, shelter playground, and landscaping Now this facility can host one of SA’s favourites, promoting community engagement and tourism for locals and those who want to see more of the Barossa Region. Congratulations to the State Government, The Barossa Council, our teams at WGA and our partners in making a vision become a reality! With year-round sunshine, lush rainforests, and stunning ocean views, Samoa is truly a Polynesian paradise. But building a structure that withstands the country's tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall, and earthquakes is no walk on the beach – it takes some serious skill! We are thrilled to be part of such a smart project in Samoa, tackling these challenges head-on to deliver civil and structural engineering of the 3800m² new Legislative Assembly Office in the capital, Apia. What went into making this parliament building climate resilient? ✅ Storm-proof stormwater system: Designed to handle severe tropical cyclones – picture Category 5 with wind gusts of 290km/hr that can destroy caravans, uproot trees and damage buildings! ✅ Built to weather the time and tides: The building has been designed taking into account potential flooding issues related to storm tides and future climate changes. ✅ Smart foundations: Given the site's volcanic and coral-based soil, the team designed a floor and foundation to strengthen the ground and ensure building stability. ✅ Earthquake ready: The structure can endure strong earthquake shaking and considers liquefaction events - where the ground loses strength and acts like liquid. Interested to know how smart engineering made it all possible?
