With the cost of health insurance continuing to rise, more Australians are deciding to self-fund their care in private hospitals - opting out of public waitlists and top-tier health insurance. The Herald Sun spoke to our Chief Medical Officer, Associate Professor Michael Franco, who shared insights on this growing trend and why more patients are turning to this self-funded pathway. St Vincent's has launched a dedicated website to make this process easier for procedures like orthopaedics, neurosurgery, bariatrics and maternity care. At the Mater Hospital, cancer support goes beyond treatment. The Kay Van Norton Centre for Wellbeing is one of only a handful of co-located #cancer support services in Australia. Backed by The Friends of the Mater Foundation, it plays a vital role in supporting people’s wellbeing during what can be the most challenging time of their life. For these women, it also sparked a friendship that’s carried them through. #StVincents #BetterandFairerCare #Always

Today, we shine a light on the unsung heroes of our hospitals - our amazing Sterile Services Technicians (SSTs). While you may never see them, their work is at the heart of everything we do in our peri-operative departments across St Vincent's. With quiet dedication and precision, our SSTs ensure every medical device is safe, sterile, and ready to use. Their work significantly reduces the risk of infection and complications, placing patient safety at the highest priority - every single day. To our SSTs: thank you for your tireless commitment behind the scenes. You are vital to our team, our patients, and our mission of delivering safe, patient-centred care. #WorldSterilisationDay #StVincents

Faster recovery. Shorter hospital stays. More precise care. Refurbishments to Theatre 2 at St Vincent’s Melbourne are delivering real benefits for patients needing vascular surgery. The upgraded space now includes a state-of-the-art hybrid angiography unit, which combines advanced 3D imaging with traditional surgery to make procedures faster, safer, and less invasive. “This hybrid system allows us to perform procedures that were traditionally done in the x-ray department and radiology,” says vascular surgeon Raoul Mayer. “It combines the full advantages of a traditional theatre with the best, and latest and the greatest x-ray technology, allowing us to precisely plan and execute our procedures.” Using the latest technology means that we will continue providing our patients with better and fairer care. Always.

At the Mater Hospital Sydney, our Special Care Nursery team is dedicated to providing individualised, developmentally supportive care that helps our smallest patients thrive. A cornerstone of this approach is skin-to-skin contact - a simple yet powerful practice that supports vital signs, encourages growth, and nurtures the precious bond between parent and baby. Here, baby George enjoys skin-to-skin time with his mum, Jess, while receiving Bubble CPAP therapy. #Mater #StVincents #Maternity

Flu season is around the corner — now is the time to protect yourself and your loved ones. Influenza is highly contagious and can be serious, especially for young children, older Australians, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions. The best way to protect against the flu and reduce your risk of severe illness is to get vaccinated — and ideally, before winter hits. At St Vincent’s, we’re committed to the health of our people and the communities we serve. That’s why we’re providing free flu vaccinations for our staff, with convenient pop-up clinics now available across our national facilities. Getting vaccinated not only helps protect our teams on the frontlines, but also helps reduce the spread of flu within our hospitals, homes and broader communities. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over, and it's free for eligible groups under the National Immunisation Program. If you’re not sure whether you’re eligible for a free vaccine, your GP or pharmacist can help. #FluSeason #StVincents
