A complex systems design company, tackling challenging problems in Defence, Space, Transport, Infrastructure & Energy
About us
DEFENCE | SPACE | TRANSPORT |INFRASTRUCTURE | ENERGY Shoal is complex systems design company. We use Systems Engineering combined with Modelling, Simulation and Analysis to help our clients define, analyse, decide, optimise, and deliver technology-intensive projects in complex environments across Defence, Space, Transport, Infrastructure and Energy. We understand that complexity can rapidly escalate and create pressure on already tight schedules, capability realisation, and budgets. Or all three. Our approach is not to reduce or over-simplify. We embrace the uncertainty in complexity and use our expertise to mitigate risks and capitalise on opportunities. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Adelaide, our team extends across Australia and New Zealand.

📣Applications open! 📣We're looking for two interns to join our shoal. Shoal Group Pty Ltd's PAID internship offers your first step into your professional career. If you're still studying 📝, Shoal offers a 12 week, paid internship for two undergraduate STEM students to join our team in Adelaide. Two interns work together on a project, using Model Based Systems Engineering or Modelling, Simulation and Analysis to investigate the problem space. Our internships run from November to February and are suitable for penultimate (or third year) #engineering, #physics or #maths students. To apply, you'll need to answer 'the BIG question'. This year, the BIG question is: 🚀🌏"If you were stranded on the International Space Station for 9 months, what would you do to contribute to society with the tools and systems at your disposal?" Applications close 23 April 2025. Find out more about our internship program: https://lnkd.in/gYp3vZZv Apply now: https://lnkd.in/gyGJYJy2 #earlycareers #internship #systemsthinking #studentopportunity

Join us in recognising a major milestone for Matthew Vella - a decade with Shoal Group Pty Ltd! “From the beginning, Matthew has brought not just technical expertise but also a strong sense of teamwork and leadership. His ability to thrive in complexity, invest in relationships, and bring enthusiasm to each project has made him a true asset to Shoal,” says CEO, Shaun Wilson. Ten years ago, having gained a Bachelor of Engineering (Aeronautical Engineering), Matt sought an engineering role where he could work on system-wide aspects of engineering – and he found it at Shoal. "I knew Shoal worked in Defence and Space and this was exciting to me. I wanted to apply what I had learnt, and, at the same time, I was expecting to learn lots as we didn’t really cover systems engineering well at university. Separate from that, I’m highly motivated by Australian sovereignty and the Defence mission. The types of systems that the military employs are unlike anything else. Everything is bigger, faster, and just better!", he says. Even though Matt has primarily work in #Defence, his project experiences have been diverse, from space-based observation, cyber warfare, electronic warfare, to deployable infrastructure and training systems. As we celebrate his ten years with Shoal, we had a conversation about his career, challenges and outlook: https://lnkd.in/gAwYkfm3 #systemsengineering #systemsthinking #careers #earlycareers #graduateprogram #internship

Last week, members of our Shoal Group Pty Ltd team - Tom Cernev and Jerome Pong - headed out to Roseworthy to watch Australian and international student teams compete in the Australian Rover Challenge. Held at the impressive new course at the University of Adelaide, they watched teams compete in the annual robotics competition to complete a set of challenges. Each team had built a semi-autonomous rover and set off to compete a range of tasks in the custom-built lunar environment. It was great to see the passion behind each university team. This year's winners were AGH Space Systems, from AGH University of Krakow - congratulations! Check out the 2025 challenge scoreboard: https://lnkd.in/gW435aqV #space #futurecareers #systemsthinking

The Shoal team are out in force at Avalon Air Show this week. On Monday, Emma Comino presented two papers at the 21st Australian International Aerospace Congress #AIAC21, supported in the audience by John Wharington (co-author of both papers) and Matthew King. On Tuesday, our Head of Engineering - Matthew Wylie - was a panel member at QinetiQ Australia's discussion on Advancing Test and Evaluation with Digital Engineering, as the expert in #DigitalEngineering. They have since been joined by Matthew Orman and Shena Howell, to round out the team. As the leading company in modelling, simulation and analysis in Australia, it's been great to connect with the #defence and #space community at the range of events on show, including Southern Space 2025 with the Space Industry Association of Australia and, of course, the Avalon Australian International Airshow and Defence Exposition 2025. Reach out to the team directly, if you'd like to catch up. #systemsthinking #digitalengineering #missionengineering #avalon2025
