It is with great regret that Liverpool City Council announces the death of former Mayor Gary Lucas. Having served two terms as Councillor (1991 - 1997 and 2008 - 2012) and Mayor in 1988-89, Mr. Lucas was known for his dedication to the community and his contributions to local governance. Beyond his mayoral duties, Mr. Lucas was deeply committed to preserving Liverpool's rich history and celebrating its heritage. In 2015, he uncovered the stories of World War I soldiers buried in the Liverpool New Cemetery, leading to the installation of proper headstones, including that of Eric George Batson, some 99 years after his death. Mr. Lucas's passion for local history extended to his research on the town's military past, shedding light on the sacrifices of local soldiers. His efforts ensured that their stories were not forgotten, and he played a pivotal role in making sure their service to the nation was properly commemorated. He was also deeply involved in the broader Liverpool community, as a foundation member of both the Chipping Norton Sports Club and the Liverpool Action Group, as well as taking leadership roles with the Liverpool Sub-Branch of the RSL, the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre board, various cricket and soccer teams and is credited with initiating the formation of graffiti removal teams in the city. Mayor Ned Mannoun said Mr Lucas’s dedication to Liverpool's heritage and his leadership as Mayor has left an indelible mark on the community. Liverpool City Council extends its condolences to his family and he will be fondly remembered for his unwavering commitment to public service and historical preservation.

Students from across the LGA came together for a powerful day of leadership, learning, and connection. They engaged in a workshop on Council’s Community Strategic Plan led by the Corporate Strategy Team, heard an inspiring keynote presentation on leadership by Daniel Merza, and took part in a Q&A session with the Mayor, raising important issues like housing affordability and employment opportunities for young people in Liverpool. We hope students walked away feeling inspired and informed, just as we were, hearing directly from our future leaders. Liverpool is on the path to becoming Sydney’s next major CBD. With a rapidly growing population, a major hospital, research precinct, and an expanding University presence, Liverpool is well-positioned for transformation aligning with Council’s developing Liverpool2050 vision. However, meaningful progress will require significant ongoing government investment through infrastructure, public transport, and place-making initiatives. The Liverpool2050 vision is setting a new benchmark for urban development in Sydney’s southwest. A city centre that is dynamic, connected, and inviting, where people not only come to work and study but choose to stay. With Western Sydney’s population expected to reach one million, the time to invest in Liverpool’s future is now.
