Many farmers, especially in the Mid North, Riverland and Murraylands, are heading into their third year of drought-like conditions and reaching breaking point. LGA welcomes SA Government's new $55 million drought relief package, bringing total state support to $73 million. Whilst this will help our communities to strive, we continue to call for more federal assistance to support our communities for the long-term. This new funding includes: ✅ $13 million for On-Farm Drought Infrastructure Grants to help manage drought conditions ✅$1.4 million for regional standpipe upgrades with councils LGA is collaborating with the state government and local councils to enhance standpipes, following valuable discussions with SAROC regional councils. Helping local government build stronger communities.
About us
We’re here to help local government build stronger communities. Since 1896, our work has backed local decision-making and today supports councils across South Australia. We do this in many ways. For one, we lead advocacy and discussions with state and federal decision-makers and key stakeholders. We make sure the issues affecting our communities are heard, loud and clear. We also help local government be at the top of their game. We provide training and networking opportunities, secure funding for projects, and work hard to reduce risk and save members money. And community is at the heart of everything we do. Because we know if our local governments are thriving, then our communities are, too. This election, we’re calling for fairer funding. Local councils in SA manage $28 billion in infrastructure, including 75,000 km of roads, 140 libraries and 5,000 parks, supporting over 100 services. These are vital for building thriving communities, but current funding is unsustainable. With increasing responsibilities, higher community expectations and limited ability to raise revenue, many councils are struggling. Boosting federal funding enables decision-making to be tailored to local needs and supports strategic investments, driving productivity, creating jobs and fostering overall community growth. Congratulations to present and past council staff who have been awarded the National Emergency Medal for their extraordinary efforts and service during the 2019-2020 fires. The National Emergency Medal is awarded to individuals who have rendered sustained or significant service during nationally significant emergencies. This award recognises the outstanding commitment, resilience and selflessness displayed during the 2019-2020 bushfires which left a trail of heartbreak and destruction. We thank the 220 council employees awarded, who dedicated their time, energy and expertise to the bushfire response, contributing close to 6,400 staff hours across 39 councils. On behalf of the LGA, Local Government Functional Support Group and our communities - thank you.

Yesterday, LGA President Dr. Heather Holmes-Ross, CEO Clinton Jury GAICD, LGA staff and several member councils were invited by District Council Of Loxton Waikerie and their contractor, Neilly Group Engineering to tour the new Hart Lagoon Stormwater Reuse Project. Mayor Trevor Norton opened up the tour with a discussion on the effects of the 2022 floods and how the new stormwater wetlands project is mitigating future flood risks while also providing long-term water saving benefits. The tour provided councils with actionable insights into wetland systems and how these can be used to tackle environmental management challenges and reduce demand on local water resources. It was a great chance to network, share ideas and explore potential collaborations with scalable solutions for councils to adopt in SA. Congratulations to Loxton Waikerie District Council for their leadership in sustainability and innovative water management. Andrew Lamb | Crystal Price | David Eggers | Lucy Mickan #LGA
