Shepard avocado season is in full swing 🥑 and our Industry Service Manager, Gemma Burger, caught up with James Howe from Howe Farming to weigh in on the great avo debate - #TeamHass or #TeamShepard? Hass avocados, with their dark, pebbly skin that ripens to black, dominate the market with 82% of fresh production. But the smooth, green Shepard, which stays bright even when ripe, has a strong fan base, especially in Queensland. Whatever your preference, both varieties are part of a thriving industry backed by grower-led R&D, marketing and trade investments through Hort Innovation. #HortInnovation #Horticulture #AustralianAvocados #AvocadoSeason #AussieGrowers

What does it take to build a smarter, more resilient future for Australian horticulture? 🌱🔬 That question was front and centre at the Agtech Solutions for Future Farming symposium last week, hosted by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering (ATSE) at Western Sydney University. From biosecurity and automation to adoption pathways and investment, the event sparked valuable conversations about how Australia’s innovation ecosystem can better meet the evolving needs of growers. Hort Innovation was pleased to take part, with our Head of Investment, Jesse Reader, joining the Automating the Future panel to discuss the role of R&D investment in supporting grower-led solutions, particularly in workforce support, smarter on-farm systems, and long-term sustainability. Thank you to ATSE and the event partners for bringing together a diverse group of leaders across industry, research and investment. It’s through collaboration like this that we can build a more connected and responsive innovation pipeline for Australian horticulture. 🤝 #HortInnovation #Horticulture #AgTech #FutureFarming #Sustainability #Automation Victoria Taylor, GAICD Bob Mullins

Yesterday, the Hort Innovation team came together for our April Team Forum - a day of connection, reflection, and inspiration. Centred around the theme ‘Growing Together’, the forum provided an opportunity to celebrate our team’s progress, share insights, and explore how we can continue driving innovation and positive change within the horticulture sector. Throughout the day we heard from our CEO Brett Fifield about how we’re growing together as a business, cultivating success, nurturing innovation, and strengthening our impact as an organisation and becoming stronger as a result. We also heard from members of our Board Steve McCutcheon and Bob Mullins as they joined Belinda Van Schaik, Kathryn Young, and Sean Nonnenmacher to share their perspectives on the industry's rapid growth and what it means for Hort Innovation. To wrap up the day, we celebrated the outstanding contributions of our team members, whose dedication embodies our values. A huge congratulations to our Values Award winners: 🌱 We Focus on the Future – David Conyers 🤝 We Are One Team – Tom McCue, 💚 We Act with Respect and Integrity – Jean Boyle ✨ We Make a Positive Difference – Sean Nonnenmacher 🏆 Team Award – Digital Transformation Team 🌟 All-Rounder Award – Romy Calaca A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making the day a success. Preparations are in full swing for the Australian Food and Wine Collaboration Group’s next export market activation, taking place in Tokyo next month. Japan is the sixth destination for the group, which is targeting high-value export markets throughout Asia to increase export opportunities for Australian farmers and producers of premium food and beverages. The Collaboration Group is leveraging the strength of the five member organisations, which includes Hort Innovation, along with Wine Australia, Dairy Australia, Meat & Livestock Australia, and Seafood Industry Australia, to deepen connections with Japan, advance bilateral trade and improve market access. 🤝 Australian horticulture has a strong and growing presence in Japan, and with counter seasonality working in its favour along with Japanese consumers’ demand for safe, clean and innovative fresh produce, there are clear opportunities for growers. 🌱 #HortInnovation #tastethewonders #tastethewondersofoz #Japan #Export #FreshProduce #AustralianHorticulture

Australian Avocados recently took centre stage at Japan’s Supermarket Trade Show - one of the country’s largest and most influential trade events. 🥑 In partnership with Avocados Australia Limited, Hort Innovation showcased the premium quality, freshness, and versatility of Australian avocados to key retailers and importers. To which the response was overwhelmingly positive with attendees praising the consistent quality, creamy texture, and compatibility with Japanese cuisine. With over 78,000 people in attendance, the event provided a valuable platform to build industry connections, explore trade opportunities, and gain insights into emerging market trends. Alongside the trade show, a strategic influencer campaign, which generated over 1.2 million impressions, and retail activations in AEON stores amplified brand awareness in Japan and drove a 150% sales increase compared to the previous season. With strong momentum across multiple channels, Australian Avocados are carving out a space in this competitive market! 🌍🚀 #HortInnovation #AustralianAvocados #SMTS2025 #Japan #Export #PremiumProduce

With our current five-year industry Strategic Investment Plans (SIPs) set to expire by June 30, 2026, we’re actively partnering with the Australian horticulture industry to design future investment planning. What should future investment models look like and how far into the future should we look? These are among the questions for industry to answer as we embark on building a new investment framework that will best serve and support our growers. Our team has been out and about, gathering feedback and input from events and consultation meetings across the country. Through the Strategic Horticulture Investment Framework (SHIFt) program, we have published a Discussion Guide to kick-start conversations about future investment planning. You’ll find the guide, along with a feedback form, on the Hort Innovation website at https://lnkd.in/g7wFR_bS. We’re also encouraging submission of ideas by emailing the SHIFt team at shift@horticulture.com.au or by contacting our Industry Service Managers. If you want to contribute to the conversation about smart and impactful future investment planning for horticulture, now’s your chance. Corrine Jasper Glyn Cryer Sharon Watt Eloise Mason Divya V.
